Wow, what a location. Tendi at Camping L’Ardechois sits on a hillside among the lush and forested mini-mountains of the northern Ardèche. Truth be told, the accommodation is pretty spectacular too, as it’s in luxurious, spacious lodges laid out on a terrace at the top of the campsite, with awesome views of the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche.
Each sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms, and is kitted out with a private bathroom, kitchen, plenty of living space and room on the covered decking for alfresco dining overlooking those gorgeous views.
A little further down the hill, but still with the same stunning views (oh, those views), the swimming pool complex has both a lap pool and toddler pool. Kids can safely splash around in the latter, while parents keep a beady eye on them from their sun beds on the terrace.
Should you ever tire of lazing by the pool, there’s a schedule of high-season entertainment for families, a play area for the kids, and fishing on the river Glueyre, which runs past the campsite.
Catering-wise, everything’s taken care of too, from restaurant meals to all-day sustenance from the snack bar. If you’ve forgotten anything vital, chances are you can buy it in the site’s camping shop. Why would you ever leave?

Seriously sporty types can hire mountain bikes from the campsite and whizz off into the Ardèche hills, climb the extinct volcano at Mont Gerbier de Jonc (45 minutes), or go canoeing down the Eyrieux river (20 minutes’ drive) and canyoning on the Besorgues (55 minutes).
Get the kids out on zipwires over the river at Aquarock Aventure (15 minutes), or have a break from nerve-tingling activities and treat family members with a sweet tooth to tastings of the local nougat at the Palace of Sweets and Nougat (an hour and five minutes), while another family-friendly option is a drive through rhino, giraffe and zebra enclosures at Safari de Peaugres (90 minutes).
Visits to fragrant produce markets in this corner of the Ardèche reward with fresh vegetables, herbs, local cheeses and wines; some of the most colourful are Lamastre (Tuesday, 50 minutes), Le Cheylard (Wednesday, 40 minutes) and Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut (Saturday, 10 minutes).
If you love browsing pre-loved treasures, head for the ‘brocante’ markets in Tournon-sur-Rhône, (every third Sunday, an hour and 10 minutes) or La Voulte-sur-Rhône (every fourth Sunday of the month, 45 minutes).
