If you’re looking to keep the kids (and yourselves) busy in peaceful and secure surroundings, take a chance on Camping Les Embruns d’Oleron, tucked away in a private woodland park on the Île d’Oléron, sitting just off the Atlantic coastline of Charente-Maritime. There’s much sporty fun to be had on site: games of pétanque, tennis, football and beach volleyball will keep everyone entertained and active, and if you need to cool off after all your exertions, there’s always the pool. In high season, much of the camp’s life revolves around the pool, with occasional aqua gym classes and a fun lazy river feature for the kids. Handily, parents can chill on the sun terrace overlooking the pool while keeping an eye on their offspring in the water. Biking families can explore the length and breadth of Oléron on the cycle path straight from the campsite – and if you don’t have bikes, there’s a rental company a couple of minutes’ walk away. Fancy exploring the island on horseback rather than on two wheels? Head for the adjoining equestrian centre, where kids can learn to ride a pony, experts can hone their riding techniques and everyone can trot through the waves on the beach. Catering is all taken care of here too, with a breakfast bread delivery service, a snack bar serving up copious amounts of ice cream to the kids, and a bistro for lunchtime and evening seafood feasting. Anything else you need, there’s a supermarket in Le Château-d’Oléron (10 minutes’ walk).

Liked: The site is well laid out, plenty of privacy between pitches. Despite being busy it was surprisingly quiet. Lots of on site activities and easy access to the beautiful cycle routes around the island.

Liked: The shade and pitch. The island itself.

Disliked: The fact that the team of staff kept cleaning but the clients were the sort who abused the site - e.g. poo on the floor in toilets, never flushing the toilets and no pool rules at all - in fact quite unsafe.

Liked: The large pitch size, electricity supply at 10A and the close proximity of drinking water taps and chemical toilet emptying point.
All pitches seemed to be level.
The swimming pool was a good size, clean and well maintained. Being heated was a real bonus this early in the season.
A reasonably priced Super U supermarket on the doorstep (0.9 km away) made for easy buying of "essential" top ups such as bread, wine and beer!
There were lots of opportunities for long, safe bike riding in the charming surrounding countryside.
The free site wifi was one of the best I have encountered on a campsite in that it was fast, reliable and supported more than a single device on one account.

Disliked: The sinks for washing up and washing clothes needed cleaning much more often. They had the appearance of not having been cleaned in a long time.
It was not easy navigating a fairly large motorhome down some of the narrow site roads due to there being far too many low, over-hanging tree branches. They really do need cutting back to avoid damaging the paintwork on larger vehicles.
Be careful if using Google maps to navigate here as it will get things badly wrong in the final km and send you down narrow roads to camp entrances that no longer exist!

Liked: Reception was good, map, etc. We were allocated a good-sized, freshly-mowed, shaded grass pitch which, along with every other campsite I guess, had suffered a bit with the recent rain. We were lulled to sleep by the frog chorus ;-)
Laundry facility was excellent and the main reason for booking this campsite.
We used it as a base for cycling so didn't use any of the facilities such as the bar/restaurant and swimming pool.
We liked Le Chateau which was an easy bike ride away with safe parking just outside for the bikes.
The service point was fine.

Disliked: Mosquitos - they loved us and we were itching and scratching for quite a few days after our stay despite using plenty of bite cream. Marshy area so to be expected I guess?
Google Maps took us up a dead end which had a barred entrance reserved for a fire engine access I think. Annoying when you are tired and just want to get on site and pitch up! Not sure how you can get Google to correct that? Something the campsite admin should have attended to really.

Local attractions

Your Île d’Oléron bucket list may include days on the beach: head to Grande Plage de la Giraudière (10 minutes’ drive) for kitesurfing and sand yachting, go fishing off Plage de Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, or swim in calm waters at Plage de la Gautrelle (both 25 minutes). But the island isn’t just about beaches. Learn of its history with a stroll around the arsenal, chapel and fortified towers at the Citadelle du Château d’Oléron (10 minutes’ walk), completed by military architect Vauban in 1704. Take a boat trip from Boyardville (20 minutes) around Fort Boyard, sitting on a rocky islet just offshore and built in the 19th century at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte. If you’re looking to explore on the mainland with the kids, treat them to colourful monsters of the deep at La Rochelle Aquarium (an hour), or let them be captains for the day on historic sailing boats at Arsenal des Mers in Rochefort. They’ll also probably jump at the chance to encounter giant otters, orangutans and cheetahs at La Palmyre Zoo (both 35 minutes).
