  • Glamping site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Pierrefonds
  • On the edge of Forest of Compiègne, 20 minutes’ drive from Compiègne
  • Communal outdoor seating and barbecue; dogs and chlidren welcome
For cosy stays on the outskirts of the Forest of Compiègne, hurry along to Chez Tombivouac. This glamping site is in a prime spot for getting out among the oaks and beech trees, and although you may not be hunting among the trunks like the former kings of France, the forest is a fabulous spot for cycling or hiking, with over 300 kilometres of trails and wildlife such as roe deer and wild boar to look out for. A bit about the facilities here: Chez Tombivouac has a limited number of bicycles for guests to use if you aren’t able to bring your own. The communal area has a nice arrangement of outdoor seating, as well as a barbecue. Shared shower facilities are also on hand, making it easy to keep clean and tidy even when your daily adventures get you a little mucky. The dog-friendly glampsite is just over an hour's drive away from central Paris and 20 minutes from Compiègne. Your go-to spot will probably be Pierrefonds (five minutes’ drive away), a gorgeous village on the edge of a lake with views of Château de Pierrefonds, and a collection of shops and restaurants. The 19th-century-style castle has a chapel, courtyard and statues, all designed by architect Viollet-le-Duc. Saint-Jean-aux-Bois is 10 minutes’ drive away, adding to the scenic places that can be seen with very little effort. The forest village has a Benedictine abbey, a city hall and restaurants.

Local attractions

Keen for some activity while you're on holiday? Perhaps you’d like to start by attempting the treetop obstacle courses at Grimp a l'Arb (10 minutes’ drive) – they'll truly get you up and close with the forest. For those who’d rather stay on solid ground, take in the views from the walking trails in Belvédère des Beaux-Monts (25 minutes). General Mangin Observation Tower (25 minutes) is 25 metres high, making it particularly handy for looking out over the treetops. For those planning to cycle as much as possible, Étangs de Saint-Pierre (10 minutes) has some splendid cross-country-style cycle paths around peaceful ponds. There are also plenty of historic sites spread in and around the forest, including Château de Compiègne (20 minutes) in Compiègne, a former royal residence with a car museum and apartments from as far back as the 18th century. Site gallo-romain de Champlieu (20 minutes) is an excavated Roman villa and baths with a museum. Finally, have a look at the Compiègne Wagon (20 minutes), the train carriage where two historic Armistices were signed between 1918 and 1940.
