  • Peaceful and simple small-scale Moselle site a mile from Dabo
  • Plan Incliné de Saint-Louis/Arzviller and 2CV Museum 15 mins' drive
  • Access to several hiking and bike trails in the Vosges foothills
If you're planning your holiday around hikes and other outdoor adventures, you'll be among like-minded folk at Camping du Rocher, in the south of the Moselle. This is a place that's been popular with hikers and cyclists for many years, partly because of how easy it is to get out into the foothills of the Vosges. Several waymarked trails start just outside the site, and it’s also on the route of the GR53, the GR534 and the HexaTrek route. Several mountain bike trails run past the site too, and there are numerous heritage attractions and historic towns to visit around the area. However you choose to explore, you'll be treated to gorgeous views – and that goes for the site itself too, which looks up to the famed pink sandstone of Rocher de Dabo. The small town of Dabo is about a mile away for a grocery store, a butcher, a baker and a restaurant. Back on site, life is fairly simple – this is a small-scale site with just toilets, showers and a washing-up area, so it’s all very peaceful and nature-oriented.

Power optional grass and earth tent site (no pets)

Liked: Excellent location from which to explore the local area.

Very good facilities (washroom / shower block), information leaflets and walk guides/maps.

Daily deliveries of bread available from the local boulangerie.

Level pitches and reasonably easy to insert tent pegs (few stones).

Disliked: Motorcyclists "racing" along the the adjacent road which backed onto the field in which I was pitched.

Local attractions

Getting out and about into the surrounding countryside should be pretty simple from there – the site has access to more than 70 miles of cycle trails as well as hiking routes long and short. For gentler strolls, you might like to wander around attractive local towns such as Saverne, Phalsbourg and Sarrebourg (all around 25 minutes’ drive away). For a bigger city to explore, Strasbourg is about an hour away by car. A good family day out nearby is a trip to Parc Animalier de Sainte-Croix (45 minutes), a huge 300-acre park that’s home to more than 1,500 animals from around the world. A ride on the Train Forestier d'Abreschviller en Moselle (half an hour) may well be popular too, or a trip to see the fascinating Plan Incliné de Saint-Louis/Arzviller (15 minutes), a boat lift with a height of nearly 45 metres. Add a bit of history to your holiday with a wander around the atmospheric ruins of 11th-century Château de Lutzelbourg (20 minutes), or dip into a collection of vintage vehicles at the 2CV Museum (15 minutes), which is open on Saturdays throughout the year.
