You can, of course, canoe around here. Camping Le Canoë is by the Doubs river, for days of drifting by canoe or kayak along this watery length on the French-Swiss border: if you're new to the art or don't know where best to start, the site team can sort you out with lessons and vessel rentals from its sister site. You can fish from here too, or hire a bike to investigate the local countryside – armed with a packed lunch made for you by the Camping Le Canoë team on request. Elsewhere, it's a few minutes' drive to the town of Chaussin from your Jura department and Franche-Comté base, and about 50 minutes' drive to Dijon. Hiking's a popular pick around these parts too, along with horse riding, biking and wildlife watching in France's second biggest woodland: the Chaux forest, 40 minutes' drive away. For more watery times, the spa town of Salins-les-Bains is within 45 minutes. Camping Le Canoë is a green and spacious site, with a garden to laze around in after a session on the river. There's also a playground and table tennis to keep the kids occupied, while their keepers can sink a post-canoe drink at the on-site bar.

Local attractions

When you're (mostly) done with canoeing, horse riding, fishing and riverside hiking, make for town and village days around the region such as those in Dole, 30 minutes' drive away, or Burgundy capital Dijon (around 50 minutes). If you're still eager for active adventures, it's about 55 minutes from the site to Champagnole, a gateway town for treks and trips around the Jura lakes and mountains. More fishing and canoeing can be had at Jura's biggest natural lake Lac de Chalain, a short drive from Champagnole, or you can take the circular hike up to the Fontenu viewpoint for a look at the region's famed four lakes (see if you can see the remains of the 3,000-year-old stilt houses just below the lake's surface). Also have a look at Arbois (35 minutes), for the Château Pécauld and pretty views of the Cuisance river passing through town, and at Beaune (45 minutes), the famed commune in the middle of the Burgundy winemaking region.

Liked The cleanliness was good. Lighting around the site was also good and there were swings and slacklines set up, which was awesome. Well kept.

Disliked I didn't find the owner or her offspring welcoming at all. I turned up without cash, which is my fault, this may have been the issue in regards to their response to me, and they asked me go withdraw cash from a cashpoint a couple of km away, which was fair, but I was exhausted after a very long drive, and explained that it was dangerous for me to drive tired, I attempted to explain this but received no empathy. I also know that my ability to speak French is still basic, but there was no attempt to speak even a little a little slower, so that I could try and understand, so they just came across as short and irritated with me. As a solo traveller, the interactions I receive make a massive difference to me and I felt totally unwelcome. The owner also left most of the transaction to her young teenager, who's customer service skills were non existent, she may want to encourage her child to crack a smile, it can make all the difference to how welcome we feel. The showers were also luke warm, but at least you didnt get charged extra I guess. Anyway, shame as the site was nice, and well-kept, but due to poor customer service, I would not revisit.

From the manager: Cette dame comprenais très bien le français et disait qu elle ne pouvait pas payer car pas d argent .nous lui avons expliqué plusieurs fois que si elle ne payait pas elle ne séjournerait pas au camping
Elle nous a insulté dans sa langue et a fini par payer
Il ne faut quand même pas passer pour une victime et se plaindre des employés qui font leur travail quand on refuse de payer
En plus le distributeur est à 1200 mètre soit une minute en voiture

Disliked Not enough showers and toilets for the size of the site. Lights in toilets not always working.

Liked Loved the rural setting with the river and hire of canoes plus a nice track to take the dog on . Could walk to the little village . A great supermarket not far away too. Peaceful , clean and nice atmosphere. A natural site charming
