Whether you’re simply after a family holiday near fabulous beaches or you’re looking to do some World War II tourism, they’ve got you covered at Ze Camping at Camping Le Robinson. This well-located site is five minutes’ drive from Colleville-sur-Mer in Lower Normandy, and it’s within 15 minutes' walk from the eastern end of Omaha Beach.
Le Robinson is a laidback family-friendly establishment set in a peaceful park, with a playground and covered pool complex with waterslides to keep the kids happy. And when you’re not on the beach, touring World War II memorials or playing pétanque with your neighbours back on site, you can head back to your neat and modern accommodation – each caravan comes with a covered balcony for outdoor eating, and inside are bedrooms with storage, an ensuite bathroom and an open-plan living and dining area.
There’s a restaurant on site here, but if you’re going down the self-catering route you also have a well-equipped kitchen for rustling up family meals – pick up supplies at local markets (Normandy produces more than 40 delicious cheeses) or do bigger shops at the hypermarket in Port-en-Bessin-Huppain (10 minutes’ drive). For the night owls, if you’re staying at Le Robinson in summer, you can look forward to family entertainment several nights per week as well.

Local attractions
History looms large in this scenic corner of Normandy. William the Conqueror’s epic 1066 Battle of Hastings is immortalised in Bayeux (20 minutes’ drive), with the story retold in a certain famed (and UNESCO-listed) tapestry. The town’s cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and you can see Renaissance and Impressionist works in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Baron Gérard.
Of course, the whole region is best known for its D-Day Landings on June 6, 1944; the sands of Omaha Beach (15 minutes’ walk) are accessible directly from the site via a forest path, and there’s an atmospheric memorial further along (10 minutes’ drive). The other major beaches to see are Gold (half an hour), Utah and Juno (both 40 minutes) and Sword (50 minutes).
The American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is five minutes away, and the German memorial is found at La Cambe (15 minutes). For more insights into the war, explore the exhibits at the spectacular Caen Memorial Museum (35 minutes), where you can also descend into General Richter’s underground bunker, and then head to Arromanches 360° Circular Cinema (half an hour) for an immersive experience that really brings the war images to life.
