- Peaceful and shaded pitches at an Auvergne site with lovely views
- Half an hour's drive to Vichy; an hour to Le PAL
- Outdoor pool, play area and woodland trails; dogs and kids welcome
The road up to Le Grand Roc has quite a climb – but the rewards for getting up that hill are truly excellent. This small-scale site is part of a fabulously peaceful and scenic Auvergne property where you'll be able to spend some quiet time soaking up the fresh air and natural surroundings.
Guest numbers are always kept low here, so you'll never feel crowded in – and the nicely spacious pitches are shaded by trees so you should be able to keep your cool even in high summer. The views towards the Chaîne des Puys are stunning, so you may well end up simply settling down to stare at the scenery for a while – but getting out to see more of your surroundings is easy too, as you can follow walking or bike trails into the woods directly from the site.
Back on site, a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool awaits after your walk or bike ride, and there are also plenty of ways to entertain children: a play area, a trampoline and games of table tennis and pétanque can all be on the menu. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they'll get on well with the two resident dogs (which like to roam fairly freely around the property).
Guests have access to a barbecue and a fridge, so knocking up meals should be easy enough; it’s a good idea to come along fairly well stocked up with supplies though, as you’ll not be close to a supermarket (although there is a bakery in the village of Ferrières-sur-Sichon, five minutes' drive away).

Rural surroundings like this are fabulous for hiking and bike riding, of course – ask your hosts for some ideas of where to go. They can also help you to organise horse riding days for all ages and abilities at nearby Equin’ox (10 minutes’ drive). For more outdoor activities, head to La Loge des Gardes (25 minutes), where you can go tubing, ride ziplines and try mountain boarding among other exciting options.
For more outdoor time, try some watersports at Plan d'eau de Saint Clement or take a hike through the woods to Rocher Saint-Vincent (both 20 minutes). There’s also the option of a stroll around Château de Montgilbert (10 minutes) or the grand Château de Lapalisse (half an hour).
If you’ve got the kids with you, a trip to Le PAL (an hour) should be on the cards for a day of rides and animal encounters. For a more relaxed day, take a trip to Vichy (half an hour), where you can take to the waters of this historic spa town or just wander among the attractive buildings.
