The river dysynni bordering the site

  • Relaxed family-run working farm in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park
  • Excellent area for hillwalking; two seaside resorts within 10 miles
  • Bordered by a river; 55 minutes' walk away from a pub in Abergynolwyn
Rock up to this place for a stay among stunning Welsh countryside: the site is set in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and lies 15 minutes' drive from the seaside resort of Tywyn on the Cardigan Bay coast. Spectacularly located under the site’s namesake of Craig yr Aderyn or Bird Rock, and with splendid views of the surrounding Cadair Idris massif and open countryside, Bird Rock Campsite is a quiet and relaxed family-run working farm, spaciously laid out over four grassy acres. As this site is scenically set in national parkland, there’s plenty of handsome countryside to roam around, as well as waymarked walking trails to tramp on. The accommodation field is bordered by a little river that guests can idle beside, wade in and cast a rod into. There's no wifi or mobile phone signal here either… all the better for soaking up the peace and quiet… The site is consistently hailed by previous guests as being kept immaculately clean, and the owners are often lauded for their friendly and accommodating approach. For freshening up before or after your days of sightseeing and outdoorsy action, showers are available to use for a small fee, and a kettle and a washing machine are available over in the washing-up area for making hot drinks and sorting grubby togs. Also on site are Elsan waste points and electric hook-ups. If you need to keep supplies topped up for evening campfires, the nearest supermarket is around six miles away in Tywyn. Plenty of good local pubs serving food are around too; the nearest is 55 minutes' walk away (or under 10 minutes' drive away) in Abergynolwyn.

Please note
  • A charge of £0.50 ($1.06) applies for the use of the shower.
  • There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
  • The roads to the farm are made up of narrow country lanes, so can be tricky to access for those with bigger vehicles. As a river is on site, children must be supervised at all times. Cold water is free but there is a 20p charge for hot water in the taps.

Unpowered grass tent site (five person)

Liked We've recently returned from a fantastic week at Bird Rock Campsite! Although the weather wasn't amazing the whole time, Ajay and Rhian went above and beyond to supply an extention lead for our electric hook up and even supplied extra pegs for us due to the dry ground being harder on the pitch we had. Nothing was too much trouble! The showers were hot and lasted longer than most for the 50p, the grounds are kept clean and tidy and the views are incredible. There is a short time during the day where work is being carried out on the farm, but it is a working farm and to be expected. It didn't cause any issues whatsoever and was especially lovely to see the sheep and cows in such lovely big fields. Special thanks to Ajay who is just such a wonderful, kind and friendly camp site manager, and to Rhian for checking on us after a long night of heavy rain. The kids loved playing in the stream and on the rope swing and it felt totally safe and child friendly. It was lovely to see kids riding their bikes and playing outside together. There is a little kitchen with a washing machine, microwave and kettles that came in really handy, and large sinks for washing up! If you want a really beautiful site that's quiet, friendly, clean and where you can gaze at the stars with the loveliest of staff, then we highly recommend Bird Rock Campsite. We are already talking about going back as soon as we can!

Disliked Nothing! It was wonderful.

Liked 2nd visit to Bird Rock Campsite and fall in love with it more every time. Love everything about it, the peacefulness, star gazing on a night, the river flowing... it may be a basic site but the views are to die for.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked Friendly staff, lovely location with a gorgeous overlook of the countryside (a bit hard to get to in the campervan). Nice walks, great one if you're looking for that big sense of community.

Disliked Very big site for single tent camping and it was very busy, facilities are a bit bare bones but you get what you pay for

Unpowered grass tent site (five person)

Liked Beautiful situation, superb views, perfectly located for mountains, coast and countryside. Plenty of space in the open camping areas. A friendly feel to the place. Would absolutely recommend - and we hope to go back.

Disliked As others have mentioned, facilities are basic, and fairly limited in numbers. Needn’t be an issue though: considering we were there on a hot, sunny August bank holiday weekend it was all perfectly manageable: we just timed our trips to shower, washing up etc to avoid the busier times. Fridges & freezers were jam-packed but we managed to freeze our freezer blocks and chill our wine! Everything was clean and fully functioning, so overall, no issues for us - and more than compensated by the beautiful views and location.

Local attractions

The site’s spectacular Snowdonia National Park setting among the Cadair Idris massif means that scenic hill walks are on the menu, as well as cycling and mountain biking around Cregennan Lakes or along the Mawddach Trail. For sitting back and admiring Welsh seaside scenes, take the coastal line of the Talyllyn Railway from the seaside resort of Tywyn, six miles from base, to Shrewsbury or in the other direction to Porthmadog. If you’d rather stay put on the sands or try your hand at surfing, Tywyn's beach and waves are much recommended. For varied days off base, the subterranean slate cavern zipwiring park at Blaenau Ffestiniog is well worth the hour’s drive to, or closer to home there’s a laser shooting centre in Tywyn. An alternative (and rather more sedate) option is the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris, where visitors can learn all about how to live a more sustainable life.
