  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Fantastic site. Perfect for a couple of nights away with friends and our children.
Lots of recent reviews about the toilets but they were fine for the entirety of our stay, being cleaned and stocked up regularly. That's the portal loos around the field and the permanent loos. We didn't use the porta showers but they looked very nice.
There is access to a river right behind the campsite, great for wild swimming or paddling. Short 20min drive to the beach and Dolgellau is about a mile away, with lots of places to eat.
The field allows plenty of space for the kids to play and run about.
We had a fire both evenings in our fire pit, logs purchased on site.

Disliked There was a generator or something running all night, busy road and dogs on a nearby property barking till quite late, which meant it wasn't the most peaceful nights sleep. However the river flowing in the background was peaceful.
Although the toilets were clean and well stocked, the flooring is in need of repair.

Liked Great site with good pitch selection toilets placed around the site and a main toilet block at the main entrance, you can see the farmer is investing in the site with new toilet and shower facilities being built.

Disliked People feel it’s ok to drive around the site into the early hours was woken up at 2am by a family who thought it was ok to drive to the main toilet and leave the engine running the site needs signs putting up to say no vehicles movement’s after 10

Powered grass caravan site

Liked Scenery, area, walks, river, showers. and availability was good at short notice, but there is a reason for that…..
I have given 2 stars as the location and scenery were fantastic.

Disliked It’s a big field with electric hook up down the middle. There are portaloo’s dotted around the perimeter but didn’t venture there.
The actual toilets are disgusting, not been cleaned in months(properly that is) No door on the gents, urinals in full view. The floor in one of the ladies has caved in
No hot water for washing hands in toilets. Hand drying facilities is a roll of loo paper.
The dishwashing facility is a sink outdoors, no cover, no light and again no hot water.
The pitches are a free for all, no demarcation, go out for the day and someone is in your spot when you get back.
There is little levelish ground
The “Elsan DisposalPoint” is a hole in the ground that stinks, with all sorts of rubbish in it.
No grey water drain point for motorhomes
The road to the site is very narrow, the hedges and trees could be trimmed back to help caravaners and motor homers.
Pictures won’t upload as “too small”.
A real shame it would not take a lot to make this a great site.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The campsite has a beautiful view of the mountains and is very clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. The showers are fine, but a big downside is the dishwashing area – only one sink for the whole campsite, and with cold water only. On the positive side, there’s a stunning path along the river which really leaves an impression.

Disliked only one sink for the whole campsite with cold water only.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked It's a really nice place with some lovely scenery. It did get a little crowded for a while. But the family that camped next to us also had kids, and our children started playing together, which was great because it gave us more time to relax.
The main facilities include only one male restroom; however, chemical toilets are distributed throughout the campsite.
Overall, it's a good, quiet spot.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
