  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Meadow unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Stunning location. Friendly sheep as neighbours in field we camp in. Pub and toliet just a cross the river. All the staff were friendly & helpful.
Chicken, sheep & Alpha all friendly & used to humans you could buy food in pub to feed them. Great place for kids & teenagers. Had a delicious evening meal in the pub all freshly cooked

Disliked The walk to the toliets in the night wasn't fun & very dark so a good touch needed. If staying in the meadow recommend a potty for smaller children or if you have a weak bladder

Poppy's Patch bell tent (six person)

Liked We absolutely loved our break in Popp'ys Patch bell tent. The tent was spacious , the river right outside and the scenery around us was beautiful. My Daughter loved getting up close to the alpacas, sheep and chicken's to feed and pet them.

Kingfisher cabin (seven person)

Liked Absolutely fantastic location. Cabin is small and basic but clean and ideal for 1 night. Had 4 children under 10 and 3 adults, all had a decent bed, the balcony gave extra space in the cabin and there was plenty of outdoor space for bbq and fire pit.

Disliked 1) The onsite pub does serve evening meals but does not serve breakfast

2)There is very limited parking at the site and not really anywhere to offload a vehicle near the cabin. This can't be helped due to the riverside location, but it does mean either a short walk down the road or (for the brave) wading through the river

Alpaca Area - Willow bell tent (two person)

Liked Just back from a 3 night stay in a bell tent in the Alpaca field. The Alpacs are very friendly but don't bother you at the tent (unless you feed them there). Also very clean animals so no droppings around the field. Its a stunning location, next to the river. Tent on the cosy side but its all you need for 3 nights. The family that run it are very friendly and helpful, food is available all day with a good choice on the menu. I was concerned about the compost toilets as never used them before but was pleasantly surprised. They are clean and well maintained. Highly recommend for a quiet, stress free camping trip away. Plenty different accommodation to choose from if you don't want to pitch your own tent.

Disliked A bit disappointed dogs are not allowed as we would be back more often with our 2.

Pub food was great and having kids toys was lovely

Disliked Toilets running out of loo roll / saw dust

Only 2 toilets so got busy at times

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. Just to reassure guests, all our toilets are cleaned every hour as we have a rota which deploys staff to do this. There are in fact 5 toilets on site all the time the pub is open (which is until late at night). The weekend you stayed was a bank holiday weekend and we had an unusually large number of children on site who, when using the toilets independently emptied the whole bin of sawdust down the toilet, despite us trying to manage this and speak to parents. I’m sorry you were inconvenienced.

10 out of 10. Everything is great.

Meadow unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The location is incredible. The pub and staff are all great. The sheep we shared the field with made the kids weekend. I was a little wary when we booked about the loos being across the river but it didn’t cause us any issues at all, I enjoyed my little paddle before washing up! :)

Disliked Nothing. Can’t fault any of it!

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
