  • Simple and scenic farm site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Brecon and walks up Pen y Fan
  • Dog-friendly pitches with a minimum guest age of 14
Small, simple and surrounded by stunning scenery – that’s the setup at Pwllyn Farm Camping, part of a farm in the Brecon Beacons. This spot is full of rural atmosphere but it’s handy to note that it’s only a 15-minute drive to Brecon (a journey that runs along A roads all the way). Pitches at this peaceful Powys location are small in number, well spaced and designed to make the most of the setting: they’re mown around the edges of around 20 acres of hay and wildflower meadows, with lovely views over surrounding hills and fields towards Pen y Fan. Facilities on site include five toilets, two showers, two washing-up areas, a charging point for mobile phones, a communal fridge and freezer for your icepacks. A communal cooking area and eating area with stoves and utensils is also provided. There is a cassette toilet/black waste disposal point, and all taps on the farm provide drinking water. Rubbish and recycling can be placed in the large red bin by the campers' barn. Firepits are available to hire on site for a small charge, or you are welcome to bring your own as long as they are raised off the ground and do not scorch the grass. Getting out to see more of the gorgeous surroundings is easy from here: footpaths run directly from the farm onto Mynydd Illtyd Common or up onto the nearby hills for some stunning scenery. If you’re up for stretching your legs further, there are miles of footpaths and bridleways to wander along in the area. Dogs are welcome to stay at Pwllyn Farm as long as they’re accompanied by a responsible owner; the quiet atmosphere of the site also means that it’s only suitable for guests aged 14 and over.

Liked Beautiful scenery, widely spaced units so little risk of disturbing each other. We didn’t need it but the honesty box idea was nice, and the well-appointed Campers Barn was a nice focal point for people to cook and chat. Beautiful skies and very fresh air help you feel at one with nature. Great for walking and seeing Brecon and the stunning surroundings.

Disliked We were here on a bank holiday weekend, it’s true, but there were woefully insufficient facilities for the number of campers. Freezing cold shower (gave up the first time as the queue was too long), long wait for washing up in cold water, even queues for the loos unless you go during the night because 2 of the 5 loos are in with the showers. It would be better to limit the numbers of campers to take account of the facilities available.

Also, we were surprised by the road noise (especially as it is currently closed nearby!), and almost continual distant dog barking through the evening and night. This is absolutely not the campsite’s fault, but none of the other reviews mention it so I am doing so.

From the manager: Hello Veronica

Thank you for your 9/10 review.

I know that Ian managed to catch you before you left to speak to you regarding this review, but I just wanted to clarify a few points.

I am sorry that you might have had to wait for the toilet facilities, but you stayed on our busiest night of the year, and our facilities are in excess of the requirement stipulated by campsite provision guidelines – 4 toilets per 30 pitches are recommended (we offer 5 and have less than 30 pitches) and one shower per 25 pitches (we offer 2).

The cold water was a result of water leaking into the switch board. Within ten minutes of Ian being informed that there was no hot water the problem was rectified. We always appreciate it if campers can let us know if there is an issue so that we have a chance to improve the situation, rather than not mention it to us and then complain about it in a public review afterwards.

The council have been working on the road but completed the work so that it was open for the Bank Holiday. You must have been aware that it was open as you used it to access the site. It’s very unfortunate that although you had the choice of six fields to camp in, you choose to camp very close to the road, and as close as you could have gotten to the neighbouring farm whose dog you heard barking. Had you mentioned the noise as problematic we could have helped you relocate to one of the spaces in our large flower meadow, which is around half a mile away from the road, and even further from the farm with the dog.

We want everyone to enjoy their stay with us and if we are made aware of any issues or problems you may experience on site we will always do our best to improve matters for you if we are given the opportunity. Theresa.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Spacious and well spaced out pitches and very quiet site. One of the best we’ve stayed at. Beautiful views and very dog friendly.

Disliked Would be good to have a laminated booklet in the barn with things to do in the local area/pubs and walks etc (apologies if there already is one and I didn’t see it!)

From the manager: Hi Rebecca

Thank you for you review and I am glad you enjoyed your stay.

We have OS maps up in the camper’s barn, as well as lots of information about the common bordering the farm which has numerous footpaths on it, and leaflets about the four waterfalls walk. In our blue folder on the table by the signing in book there are lists of pubs/restaurants/takeaways etc, and lots of leaflets about local attractions. Sorry you didn’t see these during your stay with. Theresa.

Liked A pretty and quiet site with beautiful surroundings.
The directions to the grounds are clear on arrival. The central barn is very well-equipped - stoves, cutlery, honesty shop, plugs, etc. and the toilets are clean and pleasant. The showers are hot and powerful, in a properly enclosed space that enables a private and relaxing experience.

Local attractions

Being in the Brecon Beacons National Park, there are of course heaps of fabulous walking routes around. A good place to start for ideas is the visitor centre 20 minutes’ walk away, and it’s also possible to head straight out from the farm to locations like Fan Frynych mountain or Craig Cerrig-gleisiad nature reserve – both of which are about an hour and 15 minutes away on foot. Time your strolls to bring you to Mynydd Illtyd Common late in the day, as it’s often treated to some spectacular sunsets. Other popular hiking spots nearby include the fabulous Four Falls Walk (25 minutes’ drive) and Craig-y-Nos Country Park (20 minutes). You might also like to tackle a climb of Pen y Fan (15 minutes) or head to Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) for a day of watersports. For a break from all this activity, head to Brecon (15 minutes) for a tour of the cathedral and Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh, go underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (20 minutes) or take a couple of drams of Welsh whisky on a tour of Penderyn Distillery (20 minutes).
