Wild camping pitches

  • Wild camping on a smallholding in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Llangorse Lake; 20 to Black Mountain Activities
  • Animals to meet on site; pubs five minutes’ drive
A spot of wild camping in the Brecon Beacons National Park anyone? That’s pretty much what you’ll get at The Alltimate View, and very aptly named it is too, being on the side of All Hill with long-reaching views across Powys hills to the River Usk. And despite its peaceful and remote setting, the site is really easy to get to, being only a one-minute drive from the A40.
The few simple grass pitches are on a smallholding located between pretty riverside Brecon (15 minutes’ drive) and historic Crickhowell (10 minutes), and are something of a haven for hikers and cyclists, as trails and bridle paths lead straight out into Brecon Beacons National Park and the Black Mountains.
No-frills amenities cover a shower and loo, charging facilities and a communal fridge and freezer for keeping all your foodie bits and pieces fresh. Pick up barbecue supplies in Brecon or skip the self-catering lark altogether and head straight for the canal-side pubs in Talybont-on-Usk (five minutes).
Back on site, you may well find yourself sharing space with the owners’ cheeky peacocks, chickens and ducks, as well as cute-as-anything, rare-breed Ryeland sheep.

Liked: Amazing location. Views over the valley and mountains beyond were breathtaking. Lovely nature with peacocks parading around, lambs gambling and cows calfing!
Very friendly host, could have talked to Chris for hours if we had more time!
Will definitely do the walk he recommended next time when we will be staying for longer!!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Liked: Views spectacular. Location great for walking. Host very friendly and helpful. Quite a small site so quiet and peaceful. Very clean and surrounded by farm animals (and peacocks!)

Disliked: Only 1 shower / toilet in teh same room - worked well for most visitors but a couple of bathroom hogs meant long waits for a visit. Needs a 5 minute timer. :-)

Liked: The site and the views are amazing. The host Chris and his wife are so lovely as are the farm dogs.

The shower and toilet are rustic but nice and you can donate towards freshly laid eggs for breakfast. There are sheep, chickens and a peacock 🦚 The pub is a 30 min walk as is a farm shop.

Liked: We liked lots of things about this campsite!

- The hospitality (Chris was very welcoming).
- The campsite is small, laid back and on a working farm.
- lambs playing in the paddock behind our van and the Peacocks roaming around.
- loved the toilet and shower.
- The View from the pitch.
- Fire pits available.

Disliked: - The pitches aren't spaced out and you don't have your own pitch. It is more of a shared parking area.
- It could possibly do with an extra toilet and shower because there is only one of each but they are clean, well kept and has quirky features which give it charming character .

Liked: Small quiet site on a working farm. Sheep, chickens and peacocks wandering around freely. Site was lovely and quiet, only 6 electric pitches on a level gravel area with water easily accessible.
Views from the site are amazing, no WiFi or phone signal so no choice but to walk and talk.
Walked to the local pub, approx 25 minutes, with a short walk onto a viewing area with superb views across the valley.
Single toilet and shower attached to the barn, water was lovely and hot and facilities very clean.
Farmer and his wife were superb hosts, couldn’t do enough for guests and very knowledgeable about the local area and attractions.
Fresh free range eggs available, with a donation for chicken feed.

Lovely site, would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

If it’s time to get active in the bracing Brecon Beacons air, pack yourselves off to Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (10 minutes’ drive) to test your mettle on rope courses and indoor climbing walls (the latter is a useful option if the weather turns on you) or go pony trekking on heather-covered foothills. There are several golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive, while competitive types can race each other around the off-road track at Battle MX (20 minutes) motocross track. Black Mountain Activities (20 minutes) is the place for all things water-related – here you can have a go at canoeing and gorge walking. For gentle family-friendly ambles with scenic views, Llangorse Lake (15 minutes) has waymarked trails around its shoreline, while the track through dramatic Clydach Gorge (25 minutes) leads past an old tramway to the long-abandoned remains of ironworks and quarries. To delve into local history, take a tour of the monumental Norman tower and mellow-stone medieval mansion at Tretower Court and Castle (10 minutes) – once the hangout of Welsh bards – and if you fancy a day rummaging in the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye, the market town is a half-hour’s drive away.
