  • Pop-up site at a Caithness petting farm on the route of the NC500
  • Whaligoe Steps 10 minutes’ drive, and John o’Groats 40 minutes
  • Animal encounters and indoor play area; café and bar 15 minutes’ walk
Camping along the North Coast 500 with the kids? When they get to hear about Caithness Animal Farm Park, they’re probably going to insist on staying there. For this tiny pop-up site is set – as its name suggests – within an animal park, where all the family can meet and cuddle affectionate alpacas, goats, sheep (and lambs in spring), donkeys and reindeer. Here you can pitch your tent surrounded by animals, with no large vehicles to spoil your view of their antics – and if the weather takes a turn for the worse, families can retreat to the soft-play area and keep toddlers entertained. Otherwise, simple facilities include picnic tables, a baby-changing area and loos, but do come prepared as there is no electricity and no hot/drinking water or showers. Most things you might need, however, are pretty close to hand. The harbourside village of Lybster is five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk away for local shops, cafés and bars as well as fantastic views over the swirling North Sea. And on clear nights, the stars come out to play, twinkling merrily in the heavens above your head.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked We stayed here in our roof tent. The field had play equipment in which children can use and the animals are in paddocks just next to it.
The man who ran it was lovely. He gave our children carrots to field the animals outside and then let them hold a snake, bearded dragon etc. he also let them play on the inside bouncy castle.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovey to have all the animals on site, owners could not have been more welcoming to us as it was a last minute booking. Was able to pet and feed animals on-site too ( lovely touch) As a campsite it was semi wild camping - no real facilities only toilet with sink and baby changing area available, this was not an issue for us however it may for some
