  • Luxury cabin with Glentress Forest views near Peebles in the Borders
  • A 10-minute drive to Go Ape Peebles and historic Traquair House
  • Dog kennels, enclosed garden, central heating and full kitchen
With a wonderfully peaceful setting and a backdrop of spectacular Glentress Forest hills, Smiddy Hill Lodge is found between Innerleithen and Peebles in the Scottish Borders. This luxuriously appointed wooden cabin is a haven for anyone looking for a rural retreat within easy access of sights and amenities. If you're after a peaceful place, this is it – the cabin has a private setting overlooking a field where sheep graze freely. Outside there is a private car parking spot and a seating area on the verandah, where you can take in the splendid 360-degree views of forest, fields and the River Tweed. Inside there’s easily enough room for up to five people to chill out in the living area, which has a super-comfy sofa and chairs, plus a TV and DVD player if you don’t feel like doing anything much. Sleeping arrangements include two en-suite bedrooms and a fold-out sofa bed. A fully equipped modern kitchen is decked out with everything you need to cater for family and friends, and the cabin has both gas central heating and a log burner to ensure you'll have cosy evenings. Picture windows and double glass doors let in plenty of light (and those views) at the same time. The cabin is on a bus route or it’s 10 minutes’ drive to the shops, cafés and pubs of Peebles. Please note that although dogs are not permitted inside the cabin, this stay is firmly canine-friendly. The adjacent (heated, no less) kennel can house up to five dogs safely, with an enclosed exercise area.

Local attractions

From the lodge, you can disappear onto forest paths and cycling routes right from the doorstep, or find steep mountain-biking challenges at Glentress Mountain Bike Trail Centre (five minutes’ drive). Golfers will be happy to know that there are 18-hole courses in both Innerleithen (five minutes) and Peebles (10 minutes), while anglers can buy permits to fish along the famous River Tweed (between February and November). Kids with you? Let them burn off energy at Go Ape Peebles (10 minutes), go trekking with alpacas at Velvet Hall Alpacas (five minutes), or join the Osprey Watch at Kailzie Gardens (10 minutes), where you can potter around laburnum arches and rose gardens. History buffs will find much to please them too: ancient Traquair House (10 minutes) dates back to 1107 and is open for tours, craft workshops and jaunts in its maze. Abbotsford House (half an hour), the former home of feted author Sir Walter Scott, offers peaceful riverside views and tours of the majestic mansion. Displays at St Ronan’s Wells Visitor Centre (five minutes) tell the story of the formerly popular spa and highlight Sir Walter Scott’s ties to the area.
