  • Luxury adults-only shepherd's huts on the Dumfries and Galloway coast
  • Gatehouse of Fleet 10 minutes' drive; 20 mins to Galloway Forest Park
  • Ensuite huts, each with private outdoor bath and sea-view terrace
Calling this place Three Little Huts is an apt description, but it’s also somewhat understated – these adults-only shepherd’s huts on the Dumfries and Galloway coast may be little but they’re also rather luxurious… and they have spectacular sea views as well. Each of these huts has been hand built using Siberian larch, following a bespoke design with traditional features like curved roofs and spindle wheels, plus internal and external wood cladding for sturdiness and insulation. Double doors at one end open out onto a terrace area facing out towards Wigtown Bay – just the spot for an inspiring morning coffee, a sunset drink or an evening of stargazing. Don’t be fooled by the word ‘little’ – these huts have been cleverly designed to feel nicely spacious, with a vibe that’s cosy rather than cramped. The bedroom area has a kingsize bed (plus under-bed storage) and there’s a sofa, a woodburning stove and a Smart TV for those snuggly nights in. A bespoke kitchen (with fridge-freezer, dishwasher, cooker and gas hob) and ensuite shower room are also included, so you’ll be fully self contained. Fancy a bath? Grab your bubbles (and maybe some bubbly too) and head out to your private garden area, where a splendid outdoor bath awaits – a fabulous way to end the day. If it’s not outdoor weather, it’s good to know you can also take in the sea views from the sofa… or indeed the comfy bed. Heading out, Gatehouse of Fleet is about 10 minutes’ drive away, and you’ll be within easy reach of the Galloway Forest Park and several sandy beaches.

Local attractions

Start your break with a stroll through Gatehouse of Fleet (10 minutes’ drive) to visit the Mill on the Fleet, a riverside visitor centre in an attractive 18th-century mill with a café and a couple of shops. Just outside the town, Cally Gardens (home to red squirrels) and 15th-century Cardoness Castle are worth visiting too. For those who’ve come to soak up the scenery, the Galloway Forest Park (20 minutes) is a must – there are all sorts of activities here including walking, mountain biking (at the Kirroughtree and Glentrool 7Stanes centres) and places to see wildlife like wild goats and red deer. This was also the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, so it’s a splendid place for stargazing. You’ll have seen the sea from your hut already, but to get closer you can choose from several sandy beaches – Mossyard (five minutes) and Carrick (20 minutes) are a couple of favourites. For a post-beach ice cream, it has to be Cream o' Galloway (15 minutes) – it’s got a range of tempting flavours made right there on the farm.
