Some will be making a swift stopover on a Scotland tour, others looking to settle in for a lengthier Largs-based break; South Whittlieburn Farm’s owner Katie is happy to welcome all sorts of guests at her family-run Ayrshire smallholding. Bag a spot here in the stunning Brisbane Glen to share the place with the horses and ponies that graze the surrounding fields, and a flock of free-range hens that generously provide fresh eggs for guests to collect and purchase for a farm breakfast. If your own animal pal fancies coming along for the ride, dogs are welcome here – the little farm track that runs by Noddsdale Water lends itself well to paw-stretching outings. Noted those stunning views from the site? (If not, skip off to flick through pics at this point…) They give you a bit of a clue that this is a most scenic area, whether facing inland towards the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park or out to sea and the Firth of Clyde. Getting down to the seaside is fairly straightforward, as the popular resort of Largs is a 10-minute drive away – home to lots of shops and places to eat as well as a viking centre, boat trips and a splendid seaview golf course.

This friendly farm campsite has a relaxed vibe and lovely country views, close to Largs. Guests loved the clean, modern facilities and meeting the farm animals. The food van was a hit too. Most feedback was great, though some found phone signal weak and had minor issues with pitch placement and bathroom tidiness during busy times.

Liked Location nice, farm animals wandering freely are enjoyed by the children.

Disliked All pitches are on a hill, we couldn't get remotely level even with the blocks under our motorhome wheels.

Toilets/showers were filthy - giving the impression they hadn't been properly cleaned for the whole season. We've been travelling around Scotland since July and these are by far the dirtiest facilities we've seen.

Shame, because this place has potential to be a nice little site.

Liked Fantastic site with good amenities, relaxed environment with sheltered camping area. Plenty of space and only a short drive from the Largs promenade. Will definitely be back.

Liked Loved our stay, beautiful area and can’t fault a thing. Owners lovely and beyond happy to help with anything. Even when really busy the atmosphere was brilliant, was really sad to be leaving. Will 100% book another stay, would recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area- brilliant location which so much to do.
Particularly loved all the animals around.
Food cart on there was amazing, we didn’t know what to do for tea as we had a long day out so decided to use the onsite facility, and the food was lovely.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Liked Site lovely, owners so helpful, snack bar on site is a bonus, animals roaming free, the kids love them. Defo visit Largs, beautiful town.

Liked The host was very helpful and welcoming.
The setting was fantastic. We liked the food truck too.

Disliked It was very busy on the Saturday and the men’s toilets were not kept up to.

Liked Always welcomed with a smile, beautiful surroundings. Largs very handy for shopping. Food van onsite at weekends very nice. A very peaceful site, on the hard standing across the road,even when the tent side was full. Good amenities. Plenty of animalS.

Liked I have been here for 5 nights with my 2 daughters, its a lovely site it a great position.
Staff are very friendly and helpful, Gillian advised us on different places to visit/walk etc.
Donkeys, sheep and goats around site-friendly.

Local attractions

Got the urge to flex your golfing arms? As well as the course in Largs, there are several other courses along this stretch of coastline – Royal Troon, Prestwick and Gailes Links courses are all within an hour’s drive. If you’re more into watching sports than thwacking golf balls, aim for Ayr’s racecourse (an hour’s drive away). Sticking a little closer to home, plan a bit of time in Largs – wandering along the promenade, getting into the viking spirit at the Vikingar Centre or having a bit of splash time in the swimming pool. Just outside town (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is Kelburn Castle, a mural-adorned ancient pile whose estate has a waterfall to hike to, a sculpture trail to stroll along and (shhh…) a secret forest to seek out. Looking longingly beyond Largs? Board a ferry from the harbour to the island of Great Cumbrae for bike rides and watersports, or head to Wemyss Bay (20 minutes) for the boat to Bute. Either way, keep eyes out for seals and seabirds lounging along the shoreline.
