‘Game of Throne’ fans, please make an orderly line and book a holiday pod at Thornfield Farm Luxury Glamping. This Co. Antrim site between Ballymoney (10 minutes’ drive) and Ballycastle (15 minutes) puts you within easy driving distance of several iconic locations from the HBO series. They include the atmospheric Dark Hedges avenue of trees (five minutes) and the rugged landscape surrounding Ballintoy Harbour (15 minutes). Don’t fret if dragons and epic battles are not your thing – these locations are well worth a look in their own right. Are you travelling as a family? Staying on a farm means the kids can see the lambs, feed the chickens and run around on the grassy field. Spending quality time with your mates? Be sure to make a pilgrimage to the village of Bushmills (15 minutes), where you can take a guided tour of the whiskey distillery and sample a wee dram. Hikers make a beeline for the North Antrim Cliff Path, which hugs the spectacular coastline, winding through farmland, past castle ruins and vertiginous sea stacks, all the way to the jewel in Co. Antrim’s crown: the Giant’s Causeway (a three-hour hike from Ballintoy, or a 20-minute drive from the site). This collection of hexagonal basalt columns is said to have been laid by giants as stepping stones to Scotland… On site, it’s possible to hire a portable gas barbecue for your evening meal. Don’t fancy driving to the shops to source your grillables? (There are convenience stores a five-minute drive away, in Mosside and Stranocum.) Good news: the owners also sell a Barbecue Meat Pack featuring steaks, sausages and kebabs.

Local attractions

Those who are feeling brave should head to National Trust – Carrick-a-Rede (15 minutes’ drive), where a rope bridge suspended 100 feet above sea level is the only way to cross (single file) from the mainland to tiny, rocky Carrick-a-Rede Island. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and guillemots. Is wildlife watching your jam? Then book yourself on a boat tour of Rathlin Island, departing from Ballycastle (15 minutes). If you’re in luck, you should be able to spot seals and seabirds such as puffins and gannets. And if the wildlife proves elusive, the views of the coast (and of the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura) should make up for any disappointment. Climbing Binevenagh (45 minutes) rewards hikers with splendid panoramic views that stretch from the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the northern coast of Co. Donegal, plus (on clear days) the west coast of Scotland.
