Entrance to site

  • Dog-friendly family-run site near the coast in Exmoor National Park
  • Five minutes' drive to Minehead town centre; Dunster Castle 15 minutes
  • Sea views on site; access to woodland, moorland and coast walks
A sea-view stay within a national park – sounds a bit like a double winner, doesn't it? These twin attractions are part of the deal at Moor Wood Campsite, in the fabulous Exmoor National Park about a mile and a half from the centre of Minehead. This peaceful four-acre site is family-run and filled with history, in this very special part of Somerset. The hilltop location means that guests will have excellent views over Minehead and out across the Bristol Channel in one direction and over the Quantock Hills in the other. Being located within Exmoor also means that it's part of an International Dark Sky Reserve, so you can expect the views to be just as good by night (clouds permitting, of course). Being so close to Minehead (five minutes’ drive) has real benefits as you’ll be able to head into town easily for things like shops, pubs, attractions and days on the lovely sandy beach. This is still a proper rural location though, with direct access to woodland and moorland for walks. The gorgeous South West Coast Path (aka the Salt Path) is very easy to get to as well. Facilities at this site are simple but well kept – there are clean toilets and showers for men and women, along with a washing-up room, a drive-over grey waste disposal point and a rubbish/recycling area. There's a laidback atmosphere here, with kids and dogs welcome; you'll just need to keep dogs on a two-metre lead. Barbecues and firepits are also permitted as long as they're kept off the ground.

What customers say

Friendly, knowledgeable hosts & spotless facilities with great Minehead views. Clean showers, good recycling. Peaceful. Pitches can be sloped; walks to Minehead are tough. Steep, narrow access roads may challenge larger vehicles.

Power optional concrete slab motorhome site (large)

Liked The views and the campsite itself were brilliant, the layout was very easy to navigate and pitches were far enough apart to feel “private”.
The facilities were superb, showers lovely and hot. Environmentally conscious Powder hand soap was a pleasant novelty

Disliked Not a dislike, just an idea to have another drinking tap at the top end of the campsite (unless there was one I didn’t see in which case I hold my hands up!)

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Everything. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Picked my own pitch for my Campervan. Beautiful site. Slightly sloped in parts, but it didn't bother me at all. Wonderful views over Minehead and the sea. Super clean toilets and showers, plenty of hot water. The woods run alongside the site, great for letting the dogs run free, and a lovely walk into Minehead...downhill all the way. I am definitely going to stay there again. Highly recommended

Liked Good location, lovely scenery, many showers and toilets so no queues.

Disliked Not a really dislikes but a points to consider for peope who will stay here. We stayed close to the border with the farm, so waken up at 4am by lowing & crowing. Road nearby so can hear the cars passing.
And a bit crowded.

Power optional concrete slab motorhome site (large)

Liked Friendly welcome from staff. Facilities are clean and warm albeit a little dated

Disliked The site was noisy despite the quiet rule from 10pm - 7am.

From the manager: Hi Andrea,
We're sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. We do an evening walk around at 10:30pm and didn't notice any noise, we do find that the vast majority of our visitors respect the quiet hours, however, we'd always recommend mentioning something at the time to give us a chance to rectify the issue!
Thanks!

Get up and watch the stunning sunrise!

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Very good toilet and shower block; always extremely clean and regularly checked. Stunning views as it's high on a hill. And, Ellen, the manager is friendly, approachable and always tries to ensure your stay is an enjoyable

Disliked It is a long walk into Minehead, and a big hill to climb on returning. But, there are various footpaths to follow and vary the journey, and the old town area that you walk through is extremely interesting.

Site is mostly sloping, save for the hardstandings, but there's enough places to find somewhere to pitch

Local attractions

Having Minehead (five minutes’ drive) so close by is really handy – head into town for a day on the sandy beach, some time riding the slides of Splash Waterworld or a nostalgic trip on the West Somerset Railway. Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to try watersports and other adventures in Porlock Weir (15 minutes) or head along to Lynmouth (40 minutes) to ride the cliff railway. Being within Exmoor National Park of course also means lots of great walks – a couple of the favourite routes nearby include the Tall Trees Trail (15 minutes) and the climb up Dunkery Beacon (20 minutes). The Valley of Rocks walk and Tarr Steps trail are both about 40 minutes away, as is Wimbleball Lake, a hotspot for various watersports. For more family days out, you might like to try places like Tropiquaria Zoo (20 minutes) and the Exmoor Pony Centre (45 minutes) or head to Dunster Castle (15 minutes), which has child-friendly activities as well as guided tours of the ancient castle and working watermill.
