Right on the edge of Exmoor, peace, quiet, and fab views up to the moor and down towards the sea await at Benton View Shepherd Huts. Benton View is a 14-acre farm site set just outside the Exmoor National Park and Dunkery and Horner Woods National Nature Reserve in Devon, with one cosy shepherd's hut in its own area among a grassy orchard field. Sheep and chickens wander the site – the tiddlies are welcome to say hi or go and meet some of the menagerie, which includes two miniature ponies along with sheep and chickens. The handcrafted shepherd's hut sits in its own garden area, separated from the rest of the orchard field (and the wanderings of any friendly farm animals) by a little picket fence, with a barbecue area and a picnic bench. It's fully insulated and has a kitchenette with a gas burner and a sink, a table and chairs for two, a cosy double bed with fresh linen provided, and a log burner. The hut also has a separate kitchen with a fridge, a freezer and a microwave; a proper flushing toilet and a hot shower are in the separate bathroom block.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We love Benton View Shepherds Hut. We received a friendly warm welcome. The hut is gorgeous, so cosy and comfortable. Lots of love and thought has gone into it. The welcome goodies were greatly appreciated and made our stay extra special. The bed was super comfortable. The icing on the cake is the countryside setting and the animals. We loved watching the lambs and the chickens. It's so relaxing and peaceful, you can totally switch off from the outside world. We will definitely stay here again and i would highly recommend. 5 stars 10/10. Oh and i nearly forgot, we loved the log burner in the evenings, sipping a glass of wine and watching and listening to the crackling fire. So hypnotic and cosy!

Local attractions

For pedalling adventures, the Tarka Trail cycling route runs right alongside the site. Part of the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route, it's one of the longest traffic-free walking and cycling paths in the country, going past river valleys, bays, moorland and coastal cliffs. Exmoor Zoo is also an easy four miles from base and well worth spending a day at to see the likes of armadillos, alpacas and the Exmoor Beast; the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park is also a short drive away towards the coast. Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton are all within 20 miles for days out by the sea. Wistlandpound Reservoir, six miles away, is a popular spot for family days filled with nature trails, birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Set among the tors and moors of Devon and Exmoor and bordered by a conifer plantation, Wistlandpound is encircled by two wheelchair-accessible paths dotted with interpretation boards and activity stations, and a pergola goes right up to the water’s edge for views across the reservoir. Take skater kids over to Barnstaple’s Rock Park for skateboard or play area action while you wander around the town's ancient Pannier Market and Butchers Row picking up local foodie supplies, handmade Devonshire crafts, art and antiques (handy souvenir fodder). If you feel like sticking around for an evening, check out what's on at Queen’s Theatre or tour the local pubs to sample local ales and maybe catch a bit of local live music while you're at it.
