  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop, pub and takeaway food within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe
Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury. This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.) The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great village shop, a post office and a pub. Several good takeaways are within walking distance, and the neighbouring villages have various pubs and eateries, including a pub within walking distance which serves food on some evenings. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays and bank holidays (highly recommended), and the site itself has a small café serving up drinks and cakes.

What customers say

Knowler Farm gets a thumbs up for its roomy, chill vibe and super-friendly, helpful hosts. Toilets and showers are usually clean but basic. The onsite cafe and nearby shops/pubs are a bonus. Mostly great, but a few niggles with signs or upkeep. Good value for a relaxed getaway.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This is the first time we have been camping on a wild site with no electric and it has changed the way we view camping.

We brought a power bank each and have had the most amazing time here.

The site is incredible, so tranquil and relaxing. The onsite cafe is a real community hub and everyone is so friendly.

We even watched a Shepherd round his flock up using his sheepdog - Tank.

The showers despite being in a horse box - genius idea! We’re amazing. The composting toilet didn’t smell at all and were emptied every day.

Canterbury is 20 mins down the road and the the park and ride is only £4 - we had the best day out there.

Wayne and Sheenagh are incredible hosts and will answer any questions you have prior to your stay by email or whilst you are here.

We will definitely be returning with friends next time.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked The peace and solitude were lovely. No loud music or loud peope. A nice flat pitch, with nothing flashy about it and a relaxed atmosphere. Nowhere near noisy roads. There's a great village shop just up the lane opposite, which seems to have just about anything you could need. The nicest bit is the onsite morning coffee shop, with its eclectic mix of seating, pretty mismatched cups and friendly staff. The coffee is superb, including decaff and they sell cake and cookies and bacon butties. It has a lovely Boho vibe to it, 3 friendly dogs roaming about (hello Tank, Connie and Fern) and a reading and relaxing hut, with kids puzzles and books to borrow. They do Friday evening pizza nights too. Facilities are simple, but clean.

Disliked The cockerel will wake you up at daybreak, which might be annoying in the middle of June at 4am, but you are on a farm after all! It didn't bother me and I rather liked listening to all the farm animals. Wifi only at the coffee hut I think.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This is a great campsite for many reasons - the fact it's adults only means for a peaceful stay. The facilities are basic- 2 x showers, 2 x toilets and a dressing room - but just what you need when camping. Hot showers and flushing loos with plenty of toilet roll and a washing up area. Really helpful staff on site and spacious surroundings with great opportunities for star gazing and nature spotting. You can borrow fire pits and buy a huge bag of firewood for just £5. There is a cafe on site serving delicious coffee and cakes in the mornings. 30mins from Folkestone and 15mins to Canterbury with access to great walks in surrounding areas. Local pub and shop are convenient. I would recommend this site to experienced campers who don't need any flashy add ons! Simple and basic but ideal for what I was after.

Liked Loved it here! Really friendly owners.
Massive adults only pitch.
Cafe on site and pizza night on Friday where a mobile unit comes in and we sat at the pic nic tables eating. Very dog friendly too with a shop and dog friendly pub less than 5 mins walk away. Beautiful walks in 50 acre Stelling Minnis Common a few minutes away. Basic amenities but they do the job :)
Can’t wait to come back!!

Liked Large spacious site for 3 adults with a campervan, awning and small tent.
Very friendly and relaxed. Wayne was very welcoming and made time to
visit guests regularly for a chat and to offer help or advice if needed. Lovely cafe on site, pub and shop within short walking distance and great dog walking nearby. We will definitely visit again.

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls. Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days. Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
