  • Wild camping site in a valley at the foot of Corney Fell
  • A 10-minute drive from Ravenglass and 35 minutes from Eskdale Valley
  • Firepit with wood on site; butcher five minutes’ drive away
Off to the Lake District? Barras Meadow is a family-friendly wild camping site away from the roads. At this Cumbria site tucked into a valley at the foot of Corney Fell, you’ll get to wake up to the noise of meadow pipits, blackbirds, song thrushes, willow warblers and curlews. As this is a wild site at elevation in the fells, proper camping gear is a must. Facilities-wise, the site has fresh running water from a spring, toilets and car parking, as well as a firepit with some wood. The rest of your stay is up to you – you could walk, cycle or drive to the local beach (around half an hour’s cycle or a 15-minute drive) or kick back and unwind. There are splendid views on site, and it all feels very private. Dogs are also welcome. When you’re hungry, there’s a family-run butcher in the village of Waberthwaite, around five minutes’ drive away, selling sausages, bacon and local meats. In Ravenglass, around 10 minutes’ drive away, there's a lovely pub serving food in a seafront beer garden, although there's another local pub just five minutes' drive from the site. Ravenglass is also home to Muncaster Castle and the ruins of a Roman bathhouse. For hikers, there are plenty of challenging adventures within a short drive of the site including the Cumbria coastal path and the valley of Eskdale (around 25 minutes’ drive away).

Top field unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked: When we woke up, it was windy. This provided us with the joy of watching people with tents getting buffetted by the wind. Thoroughly entertaining.
