  • Cumbria pub site 10 mins’ drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • A five-minute drive from Appleby-in-Westmorland
  • Traditional 18th-century pub with a games room, beer garden and food
Want to stay somewhere where you can follow up a day of hiking and exploring by ditching your dirty boots at your pitch and heading straight to the pub for a good meal and some wine or real ale? The New Inn 1730 should do the trick… This Cumbria campsite is in the grounds of a traditional pub built in 1730, with a beer garden, a games room and plenty of space for guests to get casual food and drinks. The pub has a great selection of wines, real ales and lagers to help wash down their pub classics. Plus, if you’re celebrating something special, they can arrange a celebratory dinner or a social gathering with drinks and bar bites. There are plenty of hikes to tick off a short drive away, as The New Inn 1730 is a 10-minute drive from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 15 minutes from the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape and 40 minutes from Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. Looking for something more local? The attractive market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is five minutes’ drive away. Set in the middle of the Eden Valley, it has plenty of adorable cafés and restaurants, as well as food shops and a train station. The pub's pitches are fairly simple in style, but have access to toilets and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome to join you for a stay here, and you should find plenty of places for a good walk nearby.

Unpowered concrete and grass motorhome site

Liked: Fantastic place we stayed in or campervan. Our main objective was to find a place we could walk some wainwrights. We stayed Fri and walked on the Saturday driving to our destination. We had tea in the New Inn Saturday night with a couple of beers. The food was excellent I had the gammon and my partner had the scampi. The new landlord and staff were very lovely and it’s dog friendly which is mint. X

Disliked: Nothing and we will be back again x

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Well drained and flat site behind a pub/hotel. Just outside Appleby and away from busy roads so quiet. We stayed just one night as we were on a short walking holiday so we didn't need more than the basic facilities, just water and a toilet. The inn serves food but we had our own in camp that evening. We did have a couple of pints though and had a full English breakfast there the following morning. Best of all, the landlord allows dogs in.

Local attractions

In town for the second Saturday of the month? If so, go and make the most of the farmers’ market in Orton (20 minutes’ drive), where the local produce should be top-notch (and if you don’t find anything that takes your liking, there’s always the village’s well-liked chocolate shop with homemade products to browse). Just outside of the Yorkshire Dales, Kirkby Stephen (20 minutes) is another fine spot for a mosey around. The ancient market town has access to a few splendid walks along the riverside, plus the Northern Viaduct circular and a trail to the gorge at Stenkrith Park. Planning to head towards the Lake District National Park instead? Stop by Lowther Castle & Gardens (25 minutes) on the way for grand ruins and grounds with cycle hire and an adventure playground. Your final destination might be Ullswater (40 minutes) for watersports and a day of hiking, or perhaps Aira Force Waterfall (45 minutes) for a scenic stroll. For birdwatching, try the RSPB site at Wild Haweswater (40 minutes).
