  • Rural dog-friendly site on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate
  • In the Yorkshire Dales, a short walk from Simon's Seat and the river
  • Alpacas on site and within walking distance of two pubs and a café
Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Jo and Rich, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

Liked: The position of the campsite and surrounding environment was absolutely perfect, by far the best we have visited.

We loved the alpacas, ducks, rabbits, mallards, and also the picturesque views.

We drove to Malham Cove and walked across the ridge then down to the pub. The following day we walked along the river to the Craven Arms for Sunday lunch, which again was perfect.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, but we though a small bar with a tv and pool table for an evening would be great - maybe a big shed with fairy lights

Also more onsite food options, maybe a nice retro burger van

Liked: Location, it’s wonderful.
Cleanliness, the place was spotless.
Friendliness of the staff.
Ease of waste disposal and toilet emptying facilities.

Disliked: The screaming children that seemed to think that the entire site was a playground. Running across the pitches, jumping down from the walls. At one point we had to intervene when one young boy tried to bash one of the many ducks that visit the site. There is a children’s playground, but the amount of parents who seemed to think that they can just let their children run around screaming like they did, was acceptable. Now I could have gone and complained to either the parents or the site staff, but within the one week, we had three separate families that weren’t related, do exactly the same. What I would have liked to have seen, was the staff speak to the parents involved and have a quiet professional word and point out that this behaviour is unacceptable. The staff knew what was happening as I saw them watching the children, but they let it continue regardless.

Local attractions

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
