Setting up my stuff

  • Peaceful adults-only site with meadows, a woodland and river views
  • A 15-minute drive from Ely and 25 minutes from Cambridge
  • A mile and a half from the village stores, post office and local pub
Ready for hols touring the East Anglian fens? There's plenty of scope for outdoorsy wanders at Bridge House Meadows – this peaceful adults-only Cambridgeshire spot is right in the middle of England's big sky country and surrounded by coastal plains. Jaunts to nearby cultural hubs can also be sorted – 'tis rare indeed to have two such fine historic cities on your doorstep, but at Bridge House Meadows you can visit Ely's ancient cathedral (15 minutes' drive) or Cambridge's punts, quads and colleges (25 minutes) and still be back in time for tea.  There's plenty to admire on site here, too – meadows, a woodland and river views all add up to a fine backdrop for stays at this quiet, back-to-basics park. Bridge House Meadows is all about restful stays in the open air (the fact that there are no noisy tots within earshot certainly helps with the restful part). This comely rural spot has a mix of habitats, so make sure to keep an eye out for visiting wildlife as you wander or take deckchair time.  The site keeps facilities low key so as not to detract from the wild surrounds, but it's easier than you might think to venture out to the outside world – this seemingly remote spot is about a mile and a half from the village of Stretham, where there's a pub, post office, basic food shop and takeaway. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on site.

A peaceful, pretty spot with big pitches. Owners are super friendly and helpful. Facilities are basic (a clean portaloo), perfect for nature lovers and riverside walks. Remote, no showers mentioned, but great value.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked No nonsense meadow type pitches, loads of room, great for the dog, very peaceful and private, close by access to the river for a nice walk.
Just turn up and choose a pitch.
A good stay.

Disliked £5 for the dog was a bit much especially considering that there were no facilities for dogs. Not even a poo bin.
NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SITE - warning for dog walkers. There’s a house next to the pump station (very close, can’t miss it, over the river) with 3 big out of control dogs that will at some time break through the insubstantial fence and attack. Please avoid and stay the other side of the river (then it’s not a problem).

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked Lovely setting, in and amongst the trees, very quiet and lots of little private spots. Right next to the river with walks available in both directions. Great owner with great vision for the site - very conscious of bio-diversity and making the site as nature friendly as possible.

Disliked Only one toilet for the site - was very clean but another would have been helpful.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked The beautiful tree enclosed and private hideaways. Rich said to drive around and find somewhere that suits you, which was easy. We found a stunning little corner that felt very private and like we were the only campers there. Plenty of walks and right by the river for paddle boarding and swimming. A 40 minute bike ride into Ely along the river. The Old Engine historic mill was fascinating and we spent an hour inside learning about it's part in Fen Life. We then got to paddle and swim up and down in front of the Mill which was a treat. A respectful site and Rich wanders round at least twice a day to say Hi and make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. We spoke to him two or three times over the bank holiday weekend and look forward to going back soon. Looking at some of the other reviews it's a shame that the site's clear description of the facilities weren't read properly by all visitors. It's made clear that the site doesn't have much in the way of facilities like showers, toilet block etc. it does have a tap for drinking water which was perfectly fine. It has large bins for waste, and a chemical loo. Part of the sites appeal is it's natural beauty so if you're fairly self-sufficient its a wonderful site to stop at for an over-nighter or 3 nights like we did. The best we've been to on multiple levels, and can't wait to go back.

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Liked We booked in over a Bank Holiday weekend. Easy to find & access, the site is lovely. Plenty of pitches, some very spacious & private with lovely views wherever you choose to land. It backs on to the river with lovely walks right along the river side. Good area for exploring Ely, Cambridge & surrounding villages. It’s a very well looked after site. Richard the owner was very welcoming. He was wandering around quite a bit so if you needed him for anything, you just had to attract his attention. As it states when booking, there is only a portaloo on site, no showers etc. We were in a motor home so are self-sufficient anyway but the portaloo was also used to empty our chemical toilet. I have never seen such a clean, well stocked portaloo. Richard gets 5 stars plus for it, spotless at all times! All in all a really lovely stay

Disliked Absolutely nothing. However, wi-fi & phone signals are a bit hit & miss, worth knowing if these really matter to you.

Liked Lots of space, trees and shrubs which allow you to find a private spot to camp. Short trip to the nearby pub in Stretham which served plain, honest food and beer and where the staff and locals were welcoming.

Local attractions

Cambridgeshire, as a rule, is a pretty flat place, so don't hesitate to bring your bike along on stays here – there's little chance of getting puffed out pedalling uphill. Riverside rambles are also on the cards: head south from the site along the river Great Ouse if you fancy strolling down to the pub at the Lazy Otter Marina (you can also drive there in about five minutes).  Nearby Ely (15 minutes) has its own waterside area, where restaurants, pubs and art galleries are spaced out along the river. After a spot of lunch, a cream tea or maybe just a bit of window shopping, wander down into town to admire the cathedral or explore Civil War history at Oliver Cromwell's House. There's also a popular market here on Thursdays and at weekends.  Cambridge (25 minutes) has a similar small-town vibe to Ely, but the city is also home to some world-class museums (if you're pressed for time, head to the Fitzwilliam). Green-fingered guests should also take the chance to explore Cambridge University Botanic Gardens and peruse some of the 8,000 plants on show.
