  • Relaxed, family-friendly campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Chepstow
  • Wye Valley National Landscape 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and games room; pub in Woolaston 20 minutes’ walk
Halfway between historic Chepstow and seaside Lydney (both 10 minutes’ drive) in Gloucestershire, family-friendly Sheephouse Campsite is handily located for forays into the Forest of Dean and expeditions to gorgeous Tintern Abbey (both 20 minutes). Everything about this laidback site is designed to make life easy for you. There are no firm arrival or departure times, and no set pitches on the more-or-less level camping field – which has views over to the River Severn, by the way – so family groups and friends can pitch up together. Your younger offspring can busy themselves on the climbing frame and slide, while teens may well head straight to the games room with table-tennis and pool tables, as well as a chill-out area for hanging out with new pals and USB charging points for your devices. The simple shared kitchen has a washing-up sink, freezer, kettle and a table and chairs for eating if the weather is not up to alfresco dining. Woolaston (five minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ walk) has a couple of farm shops for picking up bits to barbecue (bring your own), or you could abandon the car and stroll down to the pub, which does a good line in curries, served both in-house and as takeaways.

Unpowered grass motorhome site (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Warm welcome from the owner. The facilities were clean and adequate for the amount of campers on site. We pitched our camper on a fairly level part of the site and there was plenty of room for others to pitch on the level. The site does gently slope away in the middle, but levels out again at the bottom. We weren’t disturbed by road noise despite the main road being across the boundary hedge. Great free Wi-Fi too! A lovely well kept site that we intend to return to.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Facilities are good, toilets and shower block are ok with hot water, the kitchen with kettle and freezers is helpful although not having a fridge is a minus.
There is a games room which is a nice touch for children and teens. Good recycling system. Owner greeted on arrival.

Disliked: This was just a crash pad for me for the night as I was at a music festival in Bristol for the weekend so didn't spend much time on site however as a seasoned camper there are key aspects for a campsite that I look for, flat pitch, spacious, connection to nature, peace and tranquility. Unfortunately this site fails on all these factors. The site is on a long straight slope with a few flattish pitches on top near the facilities but if they are gone you are going to be on a slope which if you have back problems is never ideal. The site is next to a very busy A road, so you don't get a sense of being 'away from it all' if the sound of lorries and motorbikes is your thing you will love it! Pitch spaces are quite small, I had to listen to two woman cackling in their tent until past midnight even with earplugs in. Then there was the bi-plane in the field next door roaring its engine as it took off for a flight at 8.30am in the morning, not the wake up alarm I like to have whilst camping. Then to top it off, a car boot sale pitched up right next to my tent from 9.30am with strangers ambling by, see picture for how close they were.
A personal annoyance but only one hook on shower door, never understand how campsite owners think that is enough.

Local attractions

Cyclists have easy access to the Wye Valley Greenway (20 minutes by bike), or you can up the physical ante with climbing and abseiling at waterside Symonds Yat (35 minutes). Hikers should grab their boots and head off into the Wye Valley National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) to follow sections of the scenic Wye Valley Walk along the river banks. Kids unwilling to walk? Tempt them with colourful art installations on the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (25 minutes), or let them have a run around in the moss-covered undergrowth at Puzzlewood (15 minutes). If little legs tire, you can all hop aboard the Forest of Dean Railway (10 minutes) to chug through the woodland by heritage train. Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) will also intrigue most children with its network of underground caverns once mined for iron ore; today a self-guided tour leads to a beautifully illuminated and ice-cold subterranean lake. Learn more about local heritage with a visit to spectacular Tintern Abbey (20 minutes), with its photogenic setting by the River Wye, or take a look around medieval Chepstow Castle (10 minutes) on its craggy hilltop.
