Rural views all round
Plenty of space

  • Peaceful family-friendly site with views over Lathkill Dale
  • A 10-minute drive from the tearooms of Bakewell
  • Easy access to walking routes through the Peak District National Park
Take a peek at the fab Peak District views from the pitches at Mandale Campsite… whichever spot you pick as your territory, the outlook over the national park is painted in various shades of rural green – all fields, woods and perhaps the occasional farm. And just beyond the site’s fences is gorgeous Lathkill Dale, a fave spot for for hikers and birdwatchers. Peace, quiet and open air are in ample supply here – with heaps of space in the fields there’s no need to be living cheek by jowl with your neighbours. Passing school groups of Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions are welcomed and housed in a separate field to avoid any friction between teenage antics and chilled family soirées. This is a particularly tempting location for sweet-toothed visitors, with the nearest town being Bakewell, home to famed desserts: debate continues among local and visitors as to which is the most scrumptious between Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, so clearly the only solution is for the individual to conduct their own scientific test by sampling both. The town’s tearooms can provide you with excellent examples, and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants around too. Feeding options closer to home include the country pubs in Over Haddon and Monyash, each less than a 10-minute drive away (there’s a little play area in Monyash too, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow). If the desire to create fire grabs you, you’re also welcome to light up a disposable barbie to grill a few bangers.

Liked: This is a fabulous camp site, wasn't too busy, basic and clean facilities. Beautiful views. Little shop in reception, hot water for washing up is 20p and showers are £1, free drinking water readily available. Great location for walking the Lathkill Dale trail, shortcut to this through the camp site up the road, which also has a working farm with lots to see and a small shop selling ice-cream. There's also a Pizza outlet and burger van in the evenings until 8pm. Super friendly owner who let us park up for the next day so that we could walk the trail. Excellent value for money.

Disliked: Nothing :-)

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Zero road noise, just the sound of birds and the occasional sheep in the distance.

Hot showers - machine takes 20p per minute or £1 coin for 5 minutes.

Hot water in the wash up - caution the machine here only takes 20p coins per minute.

Clean facilities.

Disliked: Directions on arrival were to carry on to the end of the track and pitch where I liked. Wasn’t clear that there is another (better) field if you drive all the way to the top end of the first field. The first field you come to has a varying slope, I and a few others found flat enough space to pitch though so it wasn’t all bad. Go through to the 2nd field and it’s much flatter with better views. The first field is also closer to the DofE field so you are much more exposed to the noise from their games, however they respected the 10pm quiet time.

The two lights on the toilet porta cabins were so bright my tent was lit up even though I was 2/3 of the way down the field from them. Shame they didnt turn off so you could enjoy the dark skies.

Zero EE mobile service (not their fault), no WiFi.

Liked: Lovely natural site, no formal pitches ( pick your own spot) and very reasonable price
Friendly welcome
Good fun talking to the hoards of DoE participants

Disliked: Facilities rather primitive. (I don’t think Mrs C would want to use them)
Nowhere easily to dispose of grey water

Local attractions

Eating as much Bakewell pudding as you like is perfectly acceptable because of the abundance of hiking trails on which to burn off the calories (that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it). The limestone valley of Lathkill Dale, just outside the site, is a very fine place for a walk and has some excellent birdwatching to be done along the way. Further walks await all over the Peak District National Park for all abilities. The relatively gentle paths of Mam Tor and the Ladybower Reservoir are about 40 minutes’ drive away; keen hikers in search of a challenge should aim for Kinder Scout, 50 minutes’ drive away, to climb up to the highest point in the park. A popular option for families (on foot or by bike) is the Monsal Trail (20 minutes' drive), meandering through nature reserves and underground tunnels to finish near Bakewell (for a restorative pudding perchance?). For a spot of history (or to shelter on a damp day), head to Chatsworth, a splendid estate on the banks of the Derwent river half an hour away.
