Local attractions
Binghamton University Nature Preserve (five minutes’ drive) spreads over 190 acres of land south of the campus and is crossed by a number of trails, including seasonal routes popular with cross-country skiers. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, beavers and coyotes, plus herons and kingfishers in the wetlands.
If you prefer your animals domesticated and huggable, head to Edwards Petting Farm (five minutes), where you can get up close and personal with rabbits, goats and pigs, or go on a pony ride. The owners of this working farm will personally give you a guided tour of the premises and introduce you to their livestock.
Budding astronomers might appreciate a trip to Kopernik Observatory Science (10 minutes), a hilltop facility running regular sessions with themed presentations and guided tours, not to mention (of course) the chance to look at the night sky through their three powerful telescopes.
