- Modern lodges in a wooded site five minutes’ drive from Sarria
- Lugo 40 minutes’ drive; Cañón del Sil boat trips 45 minutes
- On the Camino de Santiago; bike hire available; barbecue provided
Located on the 116th kilometre of the French Camino de Santiago (hence its name), A Leira 116 is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to combine the famed Way of St James walk with a spot of glamping – after all, being a pilgrim doesn’t have to be all about privation.
This family-friendly site is part of a farm in O Carballal, a small Galicia locality a five-minute drive from the town of Sarria. Accommodation here is in strikingly modern wooden lodges surrounded by trees. The decor is fashionably bare, with large windows creating a 'bringing the outside in' effect that makes you feel completely immersed in nature.
The toilet and shower block is similarly styled, with sleek fittings, visible piping and views of the woods. There are also facilities for the disabled here, along with a communal area where you can exchange Camino stories and tips with fellow pilgrims.
Bike hire is available on site, so it's easy to cycle the 10 minutes to Sarria, where you can purchase all you need for the barbecue (provided) or to whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchen. Of course, once you’re in town, you might well be tempted by the many restaurants serving Galician delicacies…
If the Camino de Santiago is not quite enough for you and you long for more hikes, you can also explore the Ruta das Aceas (five minutes’ drive), which runs through the ancient forest skirting the Rio Sarria river.

Local attractions
The surrounding area is dotted with religious buildings, starting with the Romanesque Igrexa de Santiago de Barbadelo church (15 minutes’ drive), a national monument since 1976. Built in the Middle Ages, hilltop Samos Monastery (15 minutes) is also well worth a visit for its frescoes and elegant cloisters.
Unmissable sights in Lugo (40 minutes) include the exceptionally well-preserved Roman walls, dating from the third century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the intricately decorated floors at the Casa dos Mosaicos. For (relatively) more recent architecture, step inside the 13th-century cathedral, which combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements.
Carved by the Sil river, the dramatic gorge of Cañón del Sil (45 minutes) is home to vineyards, monasteries, oak forests and birds of prey. You can take it all in from above, by climbing up to one of several observation points (such as the Miradoiro da Ribeira Sacra), or from below: river boat trips depart from the Embarcadero de Os Chancís.
