Set in one of the largest deciduous forests in the Netherlands, Resort de Parel is a peaceful Flevoland site surrounded by the Horsterwold nature reserve and forest. Despite having heaps of peace, nature and space on its doorstep, as well as a small set of calm ponds, it's less than 40 minutes' drive away from the lively cities Amsterdam and Utrecht and right on the outskirts of Zeewolde. In the morning, wake up to birdsong and plan the day’s adventures – perhaps a canoe paddle across the on-site lake or a dip at the exclusive beach. In the neighbouring Horsterwold nature reserve, you could go for a shaded stroll, cycle on the trails in the deciduous forest or try some watersports. Out and about, you may well encounter deer and wild horses, or foxes scurrying through the undergrowth. A sports and leisure hall is equipped with padel courts, an interactive X-Wall and a heated outdoor swimming pool for yet more activities. If all that exercise sounds too much like hard work, simply enjoy a drink in the beach bar and drift through to the restaurant for supper. There isn't a traditional amenities block at Resort de Parel, but there is a building with toilets at the beach bar and two cold outdoor showers at the wellness area.

Local attractions

Holidaying with your offspring? In the Horsterworld forest, there’s the option of a laidback stroll (all while watching out for wild horses, roe deer or fallow deer) or something more adventurous such as outdoor activities or heading out on a safari with a forest ranger. There are also castles like Kasteel Staverden (25 minutes’ drive) or castle Essenburgh (20 minutes) to see and rides in theme park Walibi Holland (20 minutes) to brave. If everyone is behaving, how about seal encounters and keeper talks at Dolfinarium (15 minutes). Other family attractions around the area include the gentle roller coasters and water rides at Speelpark Oud Valkeveen, and in spring you can see lambs frisking at Schaapskooi Ermelo sheepfold (both half an hour). On hot sunny days, you can all head for the city beach at Harderwijk (20 minutes). For some grown-up time, have a mooch around the gabled buildings, grand church and canals at Amersfoort (half an hour). You'll also be in a good location for a day trip to the bright lights of Amsterdam (40 minutes) to tour fabulous art masterpieces in the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum.
