Glamping in the Tuscan countryside – and a five-minute walk from a beach and the clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea? As teenagers say these days, ‘Take my money!’ Agriturismo la Torraccia sits on the outskirts of the protected area of Rimigliano Coastal Park, between Piombino, San Vincenzo and Venturina Terme (about 15 minutes’ drive from any of those towns).
Accommodation at this peaceful site (part of a farm that produces organic seeds) is in safari tents with oak-wood floors, a well-equipped kitchen and a bathroom with shower. Although the tent can get pretty toasty during the warmest summer days, the open roof window (with a mosquito net) lets the cool night air in, which should result in comfortable slumbers. If you should spot a mozzie while dining alfresco on the veranda, just ask at reception and you shall be given all you need to keep the pesky little blighters at bay (traps and sprays).
Spend the day exploring the surrounding oak groves on foot or by bike (there’s a cycle hire shop in the village of Baratti, about four kilometres away), or head to sandy Stellino beach. Please note, there are no facilities here (so bring your own umbrella if you like shade) and no rescue service either – the water is quite deep a handful of metres from the shore, so be sure to keep an eye on the kids. If you’re travelling with your four-legged friend, there’s a dog-friendly beach a five-minute drive north of the site.

- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Liked: Das Glamping-Zelt ist sehr schön und mit allem benötigten eingerichtet. Die Location mit fußläufig erreichbarem Strand mitten im Grünen ist unschlagbar.
Matteo und seine Familie waren sehr freundlich und hilfreich.

Local attractions
Piombino has a pretty marina and distant views of the island of Elba from Piazza Giovanni Bovio, at the far end of which is the neo-Gothic Faro della Rocchetta lighthouse. The Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Populonia has vases, jewellery and other displays belonging to the Etruscan people who used to live along these shores.
Have the views of Elba made you curious about the place where Napoleon was exiled in the early 19th century? You can reach the island in about half an hour by ferry from Piombino. Check out the spectacular beaches and Villa San Martino Residenza Napoleonica, the elegant mansion that housed the French emperor.
The countryside around Bolgheri (half an hour’s drive) is dotted with vineyards, which produce –among others – world-class wines like Ornellaia, Sassicaia and other so-called Super-Tuscans. Many wine producers offer informative tours and tastings, usually accompanied by charcuterie and cheese boards.
