If you’re seaside bound, you have the choice of several beaches. Mix a day messing about on the sand at Spiaggia Costa dell’Ambra (10 minutes’ drive) with a history lesson , for this is where Canadian troops landed in World War II. When you prefer a few facilities like a bar and parasols, head for Baia Granelli (15 minutes), and for colourful sunsets over the Med, choose a clear evening to head for Isola delle Correnti. Keen to explore on foot? The Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari nature reserve (25 minutes) is criss-crossed with shoreline walking trails where you can usually spot flamingos stalking in the shallows or you can take to your flippers and go snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of Plemmirio Marine Park (50 minutes) to spot starfish, shoals of vivid fish and hermit crabs. The south-east corner of Sicily is also known for the baroque architecture of its towns. Pachino (five minutes) and Rosolini (25 minutes) both have ornate churches looking over vast piazzas lines with cafés. Discover the elegant baroque-era centre of Syracuse (45 minutes), or head up into the hills to discover the OTT Basilica di San Giorgio and Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista in gorgeous Ragusa (55 minutes).
