If you were going to venture to just one volcano in your lifetime, you’d want it to be Etna. Why? Well, not only is it Europe’s highest volcano (a lofty 3327 metres), it’s also one of the world’s most active, frequently treating Sicily’s visitors to spectacular lava-fuelled sound and light shows. And if you’re going to settle in for a few days of Etna exploration, you’ll be wanting to be pretty close to the mighty mount. So take a look at Area Sosta Attrezzata per Camper Spuligni, in the town of Zafferana Etnea. From this handy spot on the volcano’s eastern slopes there’s easy access to lots of its attractions – hiking trails, mountain bike routes, donkey and horse rides, ski slopes and a perhaps-surprising (and pleasing) number of wineries. With all this excitement going on nearby, the site’s been kept fairly straightforward – the grass pitches have trees for shade and there’s a playground in which to tire out the bambini while you tend to dinner at the picnic and barbecue area. Sorting supplies for that picnic is a cinch thanks to the supermarket just a couple of minutes’ walk away; a couple of restaurants are within a short stroll if you’d rather fill up on local fare. And there are plenty more eats (restaurants, bars and tempting little shops) 15 minutes’ walk away in the town centre. Showers and toilets are available at the site and the facilities are accessible for people with disabilities.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice spacious,separated,private and level pitches each with linen line.
Toilets and showers immaculate. Good quality toilet tissue provided and wonderful free hot showers.
Motorhome facilities all clean and functional.
Covered communal tables and benches and bar b cue if wanted to be used.
Whole site with good sucurity, gated, alarmed and closed at night
Many other extra’s offered if needed, washing machine on request, help with booking car hire, information
about the area and more!
The best was Mr Salvatore Corelli who was the manager…went the extra mile to make our camper life easy, so welcoming and so helpful. He organised our car hire, car hire picked us up from the place and a discount on the fabulous price! All of that made our 3 day stay easy and unforgettable. I would definitely recommend car hire from Auto Puglisi.
I was sad to say good buy to Mr Corelli and I hope I see this lovely hard working man again. I hope he see’s this review as this was a reflection of his hard work and commitment to his site and all the people that stay there.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!!

Local attractions

It’d be easy to spend several days trotting around Etna’s slopes, gawping at its various landscapes from all angles. Activity centres in Zafferana Etnea can sort you out with four wheel drive tours, guided hikes, canyoning and more sedate sightseeing days; just outside town are a couple of riding centres for horseback or donkey treks. If you’ve brought the tiddlers along, you might like to take them to the pint-sized Sicilia in Miniatura museum, or the woodland obstacle courses at Adventure Etna Park. Both are about 10 minutes’ drive away. Those travelling without the small sorts may instead like to sip their way round some of Sicily’s wineries – Etna’s soils have proved to be rather fertile, so there are several within a 20-minutes drive. Leaving the volcano behind for a bit, you’re also in a handy location for trips to Taormina’s Roman relics (40 minutes’ drive), the markets and UNESCO-listed Old Town of Catania (40 minutes) and the striking black sand beaches around Stazzo (20 minutes).
