Budding archaeologists and art historians, this site has your name written all over it: Agricamper Villa Julia Pompei sits on the edge of the ancient city of Pompeii – the entrance to the Archaeological Park can be reached within a five-minute drive. If you play your cards right and make your move immediately after an early breakfast, you might well be the first person in when the gate opens. But the proximity to this important artistic and archaeological site is only one of the reasons to commend this peaceful site – the other major one being its location at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Being greeted by views of the volcano first thing in the morning is a pretty special feeling. Spacious grass and gravel pitches occupy a large garden surrounded by citrus groves, and the site comes with a number of family-friendly amenities, including a parent-and-baby washroom, a barbecue station and shaded dining areas, plus a pétanque court (they call it ‘bocce’ here) and a TV room. A toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, showers and a washing-up area complete the picture. Dogs are welcome here, and the site owners will be happy to pick you up from the train station of Villa Regina, which links to Naples to the north (half an hour by railway) and Sorrento to the south (40 minutes). There are several supermarkets within a 10-minute drive… but why cook your own food when you’re in one of the most gastronomically interesting regions of Italy? The modern town of Pompei (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty of pizzerias and restaurants serving Neapolitan specialities.

Liked: Hospitality was excellent. We even had to change dates within 24hr and they were very accommodating.
Please please use directions provided by site as we got into a real tight situation following motorhome TomTom and google earth. Would definitely return to this site!

Liked: Bardzo sympatyczny właściciel, bardzo pomocny. Parcele duże, wygodne, łazienki bardzo czyste sprzątane 2xdziennie, piękny klimatyczny widok na Wezuwiusza.

Disliked: Dojazd wąskimi uliczkami,ale nawet nasz 7,5 metrowy camper dał bez problemu radę. Odległość od sklepu około 2 km.

Liked: This is a lovely and peaceful campsite. The owner was always available to help if needed. The pitches were well tended and lush with additional terraces to use if needed. The facilities are good and cleaned daily. It was magical waking up to the view of Mt Versuvius.

It is a 20 minute walk to Pompeii archeology site and further walk into central Pompeii. The train station is a 15 minute walk from the campsite.

Disliked: There was nothing that we disliked. The only negative is that there are only a few toilets/showers and it may get quite busy in peak season!

There are no shops/restaurants nearby so you either have to walk quite far or drive or just make sure to do a good food shop before your stay!

Liked: Un camping ideal, buena ubicación. El propietario muy, pero que muy amable. Todos los servicios excelentes. El propietario un 10, el primer dia nos quedamos sin transporte en la ciudad y no dudó en venir a buscarnos con su coche.

Local attractions

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is known for the colourful frescoes of the Villa dei Misteri, the well-preserved mosaics of the House of the Faun and assorted temples. The vast site, which was buried by lava and burning ash spewing out of Vesuvius in 79 AD, also includes the Antiquarium Museum, displaying artefacts unearthed at the site. Built in the late 19th century, the vast Santuario della Beata Vergine Maria del Santo Rosario di Pompei (five minutes’ drive) can hold more than 2,000 people in its richly decorated interior dominated by a gilded organ. Exhibits in the Diocesan Museum include votive offerings. If you fancy a hike (or if you want to see up close what led to the destruction of Pompeii), Vesuvio National Park (25 minutes) has a network of trails, including one crossing the ominously named Valley of Hell. Keep your eyes peeled for foxes and bats, plus peregrine falcons and marsh harriers.
