- Spacious pitches in the forest five minutes' walk from Lac de Roybon
- Palais Idéal and Vercors Regional Natural Park 20 minutes' drive
- Outdoor pool and café on site, plus access to lake beach
In a forest, next to a river and with a lake a short walk away – the Isère setting of Camping Roybon is already starting to sound pretty good, even before you add in the fact that this location is just outside a natural park, with mountain views all around and a handy little town within walking distance.
This is a splendid spot to settle in for a while if you like getting out to explore gorgeous natural settings – you’ll be able to walk to the lake beach on Lac de Roybon in about five minutes for kayaking and pedal boats, go fishing about five minutes’ drive away or head into the Vercors Regional Natural Park for hikes, bike rides and other activities among wildlife-rich spectacular landscapes.
Getting out and about is excellent – but sticking around on site is likely to be pretty appealing too. There are facilities to play games of basketball, volleyball, table tennis, baseball and pétanque, and the site also has an outdoor pool where you can take a dip or chill out on a sun lounger while the kids hit the little play area by the pool.
Barbecues are allowed on site here (pick up supplies at the shops in Roybon, 20 minutes’ walk away) but if you’re tired from your outings you can instead take a table at the on-site café for meals of local dishes or homemade pizzas; it’s also got an attractive terrace area for a cool drink or ice cream with a view.

Local attractions
You’ll almost certainly want to start with a trip to Lac de Roybon for a walk, a picnic or some watersports (or some mix of these), but it’s not the only natural attraction worth a visit around here. Forêt de Chambaran (five minutes’ drive) is a great place for a walk, a bike ride and some wildlife-watching, and there are heaps of fabulous trails to tramp in the Vercors Regional Natural Park (20 minutes).
If you’re not in a walking mood, you can still see some of this scenery with a drive along the stunning road through the Gorges de la Bourne (50 minutes). Stop off at Pont-en-Royans (half an hour) to see this colourful cliffside village en route.
For a touch of heritage, visit Abbaye de Saint-Antoine and Château de Bressieux (both 15 minutes); the eccentric home-designed architecture of Palais Idéal (20 minutes) is well worth seeing as well. For kids, a day exploring the Peter Pan-themed trails and games at Miripili the Cutthroat Island (20 minutes) is likely to be popular.
