Hands up who’s after a full immersion in France (and French nature) for the holidays. If that’s your jam, book a spot at Les Fustes de Plazanet, a small site in the heart of the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin, in the central department of Creuse.
Accommodation here is in rather splendidly appointed log cabins. Make no mistake: this is proper glamping, and you and your family (and your dog, too) will likely not want for anything. In addition to central heating and air conditioning, your cabin comes with a private bathroom and a kitchen with induction hobs, oven and microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster… you get the picture. There’s also a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
The sleeping quarters have comfortable beds (with all bed linen provided, of course) and plenty of storage, and there’s also a pretty cool mezzanine area consisting of a net floating above the living room.
Ready to check out the facilities outside? Family dinners can be consumed alfresco, at the picnic table in the covered patio area. Sun loungers and deckchairs are available if you want to stretch out and relax with a good book; meanwhile the kids can busy themselves in their personal miniature playground (with a swing and a slide).
You might never want to leave, but if you do, the local area has plenty of active pursuits – from hiking and horse riding, to fishing and assorted watersports in the nearby lakes: Vassivière (10 minutes’ drive), Chammet (15 minutes) and Lac de Lavaud-Gelade (25 minutes).

- The site only allows dogs up to 20kg.

Local attractions
Beaches on Lac de Vassivière (10 minutes’ drive) include Plage de Nergout and Plage de Vauveix, the latter with an inflatable structure for diving and sliding into the water. A hiking trail skirts the lake, leading to splendid viewpoints, while the Centre international d’art et du paysage de Vassivière, on an island in the lake, displays contemporary art.
If your kids love creepy-crawlies, take them to La Cité des Insectes (20 minutes), where a vivarium is home to an anthill, as well as several European and exotic beasties, from beetles to praying mantises.
A renowned centre for tapestry, Aubusson (45 minutes) has a couple of museums dedicated to this craft, including La Maison du Tapissier, which occupies a former weaver’s house in a 16th-century stone building with a turret. The Atelier-musée des Cartons De Tapisserie shows a collection of drawings and sketches that were used as a template for ornate embroideries.
