Fancy a proper escape from everyday life? The unusual accommodations at Les Insolites de Sophie are part of a restored farm estate in the Brittany countryside, and they make a fabulous place for a truly memorable getaway.
These fun glamping units have a real sense of character, and they’ve been kitted out with all the things you should need for a comfortable break, including heating to make sure you’ll stay warm even on cooler nights. Outside, you’ll have space to relax, with either a firepit or a hot tub to keep you warm. And to save you carting lots of luggage along, bed linen and towels are provided.
A complimentary breakfast is provided for all guests as part of the deal; for other foodie needs, head to the local village of Boisgervilly (five minutes’ drive) or the supermarket in Saint-Méen-le-Grand (10 minutes) and then use the shared kitchen facilities to prep your meals.
This location makes a great base for exploring the Breton countryside – there’s a hiking trail just outside the site, and the wonderful Brocéliande Forest is about 15 minutes’ drive away. The family that run the property are keen hikers, so they can point you towards good trails; there’s also plenty of scope nearby for things like horse riding, cycling days and paddleboarding.

Local attractions
This area is a bit of a hikers’ paradise, with around 200 marked trails to choose from. Local towns like Saint-Méen-le-Grand (10 minutes’ drive) and Montfort-sur-Meu (15 minutes) are good starting points, and there’s a lot to explore in the Brocéliande Forest (15 minutes), a place infused with the legends of King Arthur and Merlin. To find out all about this magical world, stop by at Château de Comper - Arthurian Centre (20 minutes).
Elsewhere in the local countryside you could ride the Médréac Velorail (20 minutes), tour Paimpont Abbey (25 minutes) or visit the fairytale-like Josselin Castle (45 minutes). There are also lots of craft workshops around that are worth visiting – ask on site for tips to find leather workers, artisan cider makers, pottery workshops and blacksmiths.
Leaving the countryside behind for a little while, a day in Rennes (35 minutes) gives you the chance to stroll around the historic centre, taking in the half-timbered houses as well as the cathedral and 15th-century Mordelaises Gates.
