  • Peaceful and spacious Auvergne site on the banks of the Cère river
  • On the edge of Polminhac; five minutes' drive to Château Pesteils
  • Swimming pool, pétanque, play area and fishing on site
If you're looking for an Auvergne location where you can be completely immersed in nature but you’ll still be handily close to urban amenities, check out Camping du Val de Cère. This quiet site stretches across just over nine acres of gorgeous greenery at an altitude of 650 metres, with the Cère river running through it to top off the peaceful natural setting. With fishing on site and plenty of hiking trails nearby it's the kind of place where you may well feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Despite this truly rural atmosphere, this is actually a very handily located site – it's about 15 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ cycle from the centre of the small town of Polminhac for local shops, cafés and restaurants. You’ll probably be able to find most of what you need for your meals there, but if you need a bigger stockup there's also a large supermarket five minutes’ drive away. As it’s just a little way off the N122, this site may well come in useful for a single-night stopover on a longer journey, but it's also in an excellent spot for those who'd like to settle down for a few days and explore the Cantal region. Several traditional villages and châteaux are close by, and there are plenty of hikes and outdoor activities to try too. Facilities on site include an outdoor swimming pool, a pétanque court, a tennis court and a playground with bouncy castle. This isn't a site with lots of organised entertainment, but there is a sociable drinks evening every Sunday in high season where you can meet fellow guests and sample some local nibbles.

Local attractions

Polminhac is a great starting point for hikes – there are two main marked trails that run from the town, and there are plenty more options in the surroundings. Gorges Du Pas De Cere (15 minutes' drive), Cascade de Faillitoux (20 minutes) and Gorges de La Jordanne (half an hour) are some of the top scenic spots to seek out nearby. Tucked away in this lovely landscape are some equally lovely villages – including several of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Any (or indeed all) of them make for nice places to take a wander and stop for a drink or meal – some of the options are Tournemire (45 minutes), Saint-Chamant (45 minutes) and Salers (an hour). A little closer to home, the town of Aurillac (20 minutes) has a couple of fine churches and a volcano museum. For more local history, stop by at Château Pesteils (five minutes), a grand building with lots of artworks and fabulous decor to take in and a good programme of events for kids.
