It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful 16-acre wooded park 20 minutes' drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda
- Half an hour's drive from canoe and kayak trips on the Dordogne
- Kids' club and family activities on site in the summer months
Active types, history buffs, peace-seeking peeps – all are welcomed at Domaine des Grand Pins, a rural site 20 minutes’ drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Périgord area.
Bag a space at this residential park in the woods and you’ll be within easy reach of heaps of the area’s finest days out. Within a radius of 15 kilometres, you can access Sarlat’s medieval old town, Montignac and the Lascaux caves, the caverns carved out of the rock at Les Eyzies, canoe trips on the Dordogne and a whole range of UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites.
Mind you, the days in are pretty great here, too. If you’re in need of an extended sit down (avec book and/or glass of wine perhaps) there’s heaps of space around this 16-acre site to find your happy place. Meanwhile more energetic guests (and excitable small sorts) can be filling their hours splashing about at the pool, leaping about on the trampoline or bouncy castle and playing games of miniature golf, pétanque and table tennis.
Come the heady days of summer and the activity level ratchets up again, with all manner of family-friendly fun stuff laid on by day and by night – sports tournaments, guided hikes, farm visits and discos among the offerings.
Feed the family however you wish – hit the communal barbecues with bits bought from the site’s grocery store, feast on fresh bread and pastries (baked on site and delivered every morning) or delegate culinary responsibility to the site team, who can make you up a hamper if a picnic’s in the offing. Finally, there’s an on-site snack bar too, open at midday and in the evening in the high season.

Local attractions
This region is a good fit for fans of walking and cycling, as there are many hiking trails and bike tracks in the surrounding area – some of which can be reached directly from the site’s grounds. Route maps are provided.
You could also check out the subterranean scene, as the site organises potholing sessions led by qualified guides for all abilities (charges apply). Similarly, you could visit Lascaux and its cave paintings (15 minutes’ drive); La Roque Saint-Christophe’s troglodyte dwellings are also within reach (25 minutes).
Elsewhere in the surrounding area, horse riding, swimming or fishing in the lake at Tamniès and canoe/kayak jaunts along the Dordogne are all half an hour away by road.
For a glimpse of how the other half once lived, take in a château or two – it’ll take you half an hour or so to drive to clifftop Château de Beynac, or 45 minutes to get to Château des Milandes to see the fab falconry displays. The fan gardens at Marqueyssac are well worth a half-hour drive, too.
