Grab yourself some spectacular Dordogne views along with a spacious and luxurious safari tent at Home Sweet Lodge. This small-scale and peaceful glampsite is set in a former vineyard five minutes’ drive from the sleepy village of Saint-Germain-et-Mons, and 20 minutes from Bergerac.
The tents come with a high comfort spec and sleep up to eight guests in bedrooms with a combination of double, single and bunk beds. Each ensuite bathroom has a rainfall shower, and well-equipped kitchens are kitted out with dishwashers, induction hobs, fridge-freezers and microwaves to make feeding everybody a doddle in the open-plan living and dining area.
Outside, the safari tents have covered decks and a barbecue, plus seating for alfresco dining and absorbing the views across forested hills. Around the site there’s a saltwater swimming pool, pétanque court, football field, ping-pong table and a playground with a trampoline (as well as loads of other games) to keep the whole family occupied
The welcoming hosts Inge and Joost van der Sande are always on hand if you need tourist information, help or just a chat. Occasionally they open their on-site bar, where guests can get to know each other and swap tales of their holiday adventures over a glass of a chilled local Chardonnay and a snack.

Local attractions
If you’re into fine wines, you’ve certainly come to the right region; immediately to the west of the glampsite are the vineyards of Bergerac, with many stellar names such as Château de Tiregand (10 minutes’ drive) and Château de Monbazillac (20 minutes) open for tours of their vines and cellars as well as tastings. Head a little further west and you’ll hit the grand cru wine châteaux of Bordeaux in the areas around Saint-Émilion and Pomérol (both an hour and 15 minutes).
To find out more about the region’s wines, hit the Maison des Vins in Bergerac (20 minutes), where you can also meander along the bank of the famed Dordogne River, admire the half-timbered house along Rue St-Clar and grab coffee in one of pretty Place Pélissière’s pavement cafés.
More lovely spots along the route of the Dordogne include Sarlat (an hour and 10 minutes), with its carefully restored medieval heart, and Beynac (55 minutes), which has a dramatic setting creeping up the cliffside. The imposing Château de Beynac sits on a rocky promontory above the village and is open for tours of stables, courtyards and sumptuous interiors.
