  • Simple, remote campground on a Queensland permaculture farm
  • Gatton National Park 15 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to Toowoomba
  • Excellent stargazing; unfenced dams for wildlife spotting
Secluded, simple… and simply stunning. Echoes in the Valley is a rural Queensland site that’s all about wild camping and wildlife. In a quiet spot about 15 minutes’ drive from Gatton, this supremely peaceful site is part of a working farm that’s home to cows, goats, camels and other livestock as well as a small team working to develop a permaculture practice for sustainable food production. Around the farm, the surrounding bushland is a real wildlife haven, and you’ll have a particularly good chance of spotting something if you head to one of the unfenced dams that both wildlife and livestock are fond of. To help you get to know the area and find out what to look out for, the team on site offer trekking and birdwatching outings (and they’ll also allow you to feed the camels for a small extra charge). Wildlife isn’t all you’re likely to see in this remote location – being so far from urban development means a very low level of light pollution, and that in turn means some excellently dark skies for stargazing. It’s well worth bringing your binoculars, telescope and/or astro-photography kit out here. In fact, you’ll need to bring most of what you need to this site, as it’s a simple place with very little by way of camping infrastructure. Do leave a bit of scope for a taste of the farm though – there are usually eggs and seasonal veg for sale.
