  • Well-maintained Flintshire countryside caravan park near Ewloe
  • A five-minute drive to Gladstone’s Library; Chester 15 minutes
  • Well-stocked carp ponds for anglers, plus fishing shop and café
Up for the sort of fishing holiday where you can spend many, many hours by the waterside? You'll fit right in at Stamford Way Fisheries and Camping, a fishing hotspot in quiet north Wales countryside near Ewloe, and with easy access off the A55. This is a place where anglers of all ages and abilities have the chance to try their luck on two pools from dawn until dusk. Campers get discounted rates for fishing, so what’s on offer? The carefully tended Twin Oak coarse fishing pools, well-stocked with carp and with numerous fishing pegs (including a wheelchair-friendly peg) available every day. This is a great base for fishing families, as kids can learn new skills just a short way from their caravan pitch, while experts can get stuck into competitive match fishing and festivals throughout the year. Left some kit at home? A small shop on site sells bait and pellets. And what of the pitch facilities? There's a small number of pitches for tourers, with electric hook-ups, a spotless shower block and local information in reception. And as far as catering goes, you can spark up the barbecue for alfresco feasts or abandon cooking altogether and head for the on-site café, open daily during the open season. Teas, coffees, soft drinks and alcohol are all on offer, as well as freshly prepared food taking you from breakfast to supper. If you need to stock up, head to Ewloe (five minutes’ drive), with supermarkets, post office and a petrol station, plus a pub and takeaways if you fancy venturing out of an evening.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay, the family who own the site are extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. There were quite a few other people staying on site, all of which were friendly, it had a great relaxed atmosphere where the kids could be kids and felt safe. We will definitely stay again as it is a perfect location for us to visit family.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendliness and welcoming staff. Good café.
Good toilets and showers.
The fact it is open all the year round.
Good location for visiting the Wirral and Chester. Was there in December for 3 nights during the most atrocious storm Darragh. Would definitely stay there again.

Disliked: Unfortunately at present they only have grass pitches but as the grass was not usable due to being waterlogged they let me pitch on the gravel track which was like pitching on a hard standing so was fine. The place for washing dishes would have been well adequate in clement weather but with storm Darragh was not usable as it has no cover to protect you from the weather.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Really nice facilities and definitely a very warm and helpful welcome. The Grass pitch stood up to my weighty old girl ...thats just how it is in November, but it was all good. I'll definitely be returning in better weather. Some good walks locally, and easily in reach of Chester, North Wales coast and Merseyside.

Local attractions

Looking for a dose of culture on your fishing break? Try the romantic ruins of 13th-century Ewloe Castle (10 minutes’ walk), with fantastic rural views from its parapet. Hilltop Hawarden Old Castle (10 minutes’ drive) played an important role in medieval border skirmishes and is sometimes open on summer weekends. Also worth a peek is Gladstone’s Library (five minutes), neo-Gothic reading rooms founded in 1898 and set in formal gardens. Cultured Chester (15 minutes) is a walled Roman city packed with history museums, galleries, shops and traditional half-timbered pubs. You can also take a boat trip down the River Dee and visit Chester Zoo, or hit Chester Racecourse (both 15 minutes) for horse racing and international polo matches in summer. Kids in tow? Head to Wepre Park (five minutes) for wooded walks to waterfalls, a skate park and a cracking playground for younger offspring. Families can hike off excess energy in Loggerheads Country Park (15 minutes), with lots of opportunities for river paddling and picnicking with views of Moel Famau (25 minutes), a popular hiking destination and the highest summit in the Clwydian Range.
