  • Well-maintained caravan park in the remote Ettrick Valley
  • Half an hour's drive from Selkirk and Hawick; Peebles 40 minutes
  • Great fishing on site and in the area; café/shop on site
Surrounding yourselves with the stunning scenery of the Scottish Borders is the thing at Honey Cottage Caravan Park – this quiet rural park is in the remote Ettrick Valley, about half an hour’s drive from Selkirk and Hawick. This peaceful part of the country is packed with excellent places to get out for a walk or a bike ride, with established trails like the Southern Upland Way and Captain’s Road Walk nearby as well as scenic spots like St Mary’s Loch and Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall. Whether you head out to explore or simply stay put on site, you can also look out for lots of wildlife – badgers, red squirrels and hares can be seen at ground level, with peregrines, osprey and kingfishers flying around. It’s a great area for fishing too, with excellent fly fishing along the Ettrick Water, and there are a couple of golf courses around as well. On site, you’ll be staying in well-maintained static caravans, each with its own bathroom and kitchen area (with fridge, cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster), plus space to relax outdoors or to flop on the sofa in front of the TV inside. There’s a shop on site, plus a café for those times when you don’t fancy cooking; alternatively there’s a pub a mile up the road.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Virtually everything. Well kept, good facilities, peaceful and great for kids. Shop and cafe in site.

Disliked: The sharp stone hard standing and parts of the track were not kind to dog paws. Hopefully this will break up and pack down eventually.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The setting is delightful and very relaxed. Nice to have a respite from rules and notices. On site shop and cafe well stocked and friendly.

Disliked: Not really a dislike as were the only campers there at the time but I wonder if the minimal toilet facilities will be adequate when there are more folk staying.

Willerby Aspen 3 bedroom static caravan (six person, no pets)

Liked: What a perfect spot this was for what we wanted from our weekend. So pretty and with our own river to try our hand at fishing. Our park wardens were lovely and friendly and so helpful with suggestions of where to visit.
The cafe and shop were so handy.
Food at the Cross Keys Inn Etterickbridge was delicious.
Great to get back to St Mary's loch and the Grey Mares Tail again.

Disliked: Some very narrow roads in the vicinity, fine if you can take your time and are a careful driver.
The gas had run out when we tried cooking on our first day but the warden came round straightaway to replace the bottle.

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Peace and quiet. Beautiful surroundings. Plenty of dog walks. Amazing playpark if you have kids. Excellent cafe and shop. Pleasant wardens. Best shower I've ever been in on a campsite.

Disliked: Not a dislike but the showers are a bit of a hike from the touring pitches but hey ho.

Local attractions

Bring your fishing kit along if you're into your angling; the Ettrick Water has 12 miles of mainly double bank fishing available, with 80 named pools to choose from, and it’s gained a reputation for some of the best and most varied fishing in the country. There are lots of great walks around this area too, so bring along your boots to explore the woods at Glenlude (20 minutes' drive), get up to Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall (half an hour) or clamber up Broad Law (40 minutes). There’s a Go Ape course at Glentress Forest (40 minutes) for intrepid sorts, with rather gentler pursuits at Velvet Hall Alpacas (half an hour). Other days out nearby might take you to the historic house, pretty gardens and craft workshops at Traquair House (half an hour), to see the Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels (45 minutes) or to learn about whisky making at Borders Distillery (half an hour). Pretty Peebles and Melrose (both 40 minutes) are worth a visit as well.
