‘Urban glamping' is how the owners of PodUmna Village describe their place – and it's a most appropriate phrase, as this Co. Galway location benefits from both a convenient town location (in the pretty town of Portumna) and peaceful woodland surroundings.
Sitting among the trees at this spot on the banks of the River Shannon, the wooden pods make a lovely place for a relaxing break spent looking out for wildlife, soaking up the fresh air and (hopefully) enjoying a bit of sunshine. Want to complete the picture with a barbecue dinner, a few snacks, a drink or perhaps a cheeky takeaway? Handily, there are several shops and takeaways a few minutes' walk away where you can source all of the above.
A barbecue is available on site for your alfresco cooking, along with outdoor tables where you can serve up your feast. And damp days need not spoil your dinner plans, as there’s also a fully equipped kitchen, an indoor dining area and some outdoor covered tables where you can keep the open-air proceedings going in all weathers.
The pods themselves have been equally well thought out, too – each one has bed and bed linen provided, along with heating, electric sockets and little extras like outdoor fairy lights. Smart shared bathrooms are a short walk from the pods (please note you'll need to bring your own towels, or hire on site for a small extra fee).

- No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
- Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
- The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.
- At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- No charcoal barbecues allowed.

Local attractions
Most guests have little problem filling their time around Portumna, as this area is full of cultural and natural attraction. You’ll want to start with a wander around the town itself, visiting the castle, walled gardens, friary and the Irish Workhouse Centre to take a dip into Portumna’s history – and of course stopping by in one of the pubs for a glass of the black stuff.
After that, perhaps you’d like to play a round at Portumna Golf Club (five minutes' drive), take a walk along the banks of the River Shannon or explore the trails of the 1500-acre Portumna Forest Park (five minutes). Lough Derg (a kilometre from the site) is the place for wild swimming, fishing and boat trips, and there’s bike hire on site if you'd like to explore further afield.
Beyond Portumna itself, the surrounding area has plenty of active options including things like go-karting, kayaking, horse riding and mountain biking (try Bike Park Ireland, 20 minutes away, for this). For a quieter time, take to the water with Killaloe River Cruises (45 minutes) or meet the animals at Turoe Pet Farm (35 minutes).
