- Small, simple and peaceful site between Schull and Ballydehob
- Baltimore and Barley Cove beach within a half-hour drive
- Lots of options close by for coast and country walks; dogs welcome
Right down in the far southwestern corner of the Republic of Ireland, Fortfield is a lovely little place for some peaceful chillout time among gorgeous scenery. This tiny site is part of a private property five minutes’ drive from the small seaside town of Schull, a great spot for some time exploring the Mizen Peninsula and other parts of the Cork coastline.
There are only a handful of pitches at this site, so there’s always plenty of space to spread out and a nicely calm atmosphere. It’s a simple setup here, with just a toilet block on the facilities front (please note there’s no drinking water and no hot water or showers). Dogs are welcome on site, and there are heaps of options for walks nearby – quiet paths and lanes run through the surrounding countryside and along the coast.
The vibe on site is very much one of quiet countryside, but there are amenities not far away, either in Schull or in the artsy village of Balleydehob (five minutes’ drive). That means you’ll easily be able to find shops, pubs and places to eat as well as being close to outdoor activities including cycling and sailing.
There should be plenty to keep you busy in the surrounding area, but if you fancy venturing a little further afield you can reach Barley Cove beach, Mizen Head Signal Station and Baltimore within a half-hour drive.

Local attractions
The nearby village of Ballydehob (five minutes' drive) is a traditional place with lots of nice little craft shops and independent cafés as well as a thriving artistic community that puts on festivals and all sorts of music and art events. Schull has plenty of shops to browse too, along with a popular Sunday market. It’s also home to the Republic of Ireland’s only planetarium, a community-run project that's well worth a visit.
A little way off the coast of Schull is Cape Clear Island – reachable by ferry from Schull (in summer) or Baltimore (half an hour’s drive). This Gaeltacht island is full of fabulous scenery and historic remnants, and it’s a great place for wildlife spotting; look out for dolphins, turtles and whales as well as various bird species.
Over on the Mizen Peninsula, a couple of favourite spots are the spectacular sands of Barley Cove beach (25 minutes) and the dramatic cliffs of Mizen Head Signal Station (35 minutes), Ireland’s most southwesterly point.
