  • Cosy, dog-friendly bell tent with views over the Dorset countryside
  • Within half an hour’s drive of the Jurassic Coast and New Forest
  • Outdoor kitchen on site and a river nearby for wild swimming
Keen for a quiet break surrounded by the Dorset countryside? Top Field should tick your boxes. It’s very chilled at this hilltop site, and there's plenty of exploring to be done too, as it's just half an hour’s drive away from the New Forest National Park and the Jurassic Coast. Yes, the famed Jurassic Coast (a top spot for stunning beaches, fossil hunting activities, boat trips, and tasty local restaurants) should certainly be on your schedule: top spots like Durdle Door and Kimmeridge Bay are 40 minutes’ drive away. Elsewhere, the closest beach to the bell tent is in Hamworthy (just outside of Poole), 25 minutes’ drive away. Not that you need to go far for a swim, as there is a river a short walk away for all your wild swimming needs. The field is also next to a bridleway, so go for a stroll whenever you fancy; more walking and cycling paths are in the surrounding area, and the South West Coast Path is half an hour's drive away. There are a couple of pubs within walking distance of Top Field too. The first is in Charlton, 15 minutes’ walk away, and the second is just a bit further on (half an hour’s walk from base) for a cosy meal or drinks. A shared outdoor kitchen, a composting toilet and an outdoor shower make up the facilities on site. Take note that very low sports cars will struggle to access the site; normal vehicles are fine.

Bell tent

Liked: We stayed in the bell tent over the Easter weekend. The tent was massive and came with a good sized bath towel and hair towel each, crockery and cutlery, tea and coffee supplies, comfy chair/loungers, a fire pit and wood as well as a lighter. There is also a covered camp kitchen with sink and stove. The views were beautiful and the campsite was super quiet. We hadn’t decided what to do that weekend other than get outside, and it’s well placed for getting down to the coast or other inland attractions. It’s also a ten minute walk to the local pub (The Charlton Inn) which had a great menu (and fab allergen understanding).

The customer service was also great - I had only booked two nights and been so poorly with a cold and morning sickness the week before that I messaged to cancel the first night and Emma kindly offered to shift our booking a night later. She also reminded us to bring wellies when it was expected the forecast would be bad and put out an extra blanket when it was due to be chilly.

Disliked: As an FYI only - the Charlton Inn doesn’t do food on Sunday evenings so it’s a very short trip into Blandford for another pub or other meal on a Sunday night!

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: My second stay at the site - very peaceful. I had the place to myself as during the Christmas holidays. Hosts happy to let me crack on. Facilities basic but just what I needed. Found the local pub this time - the Charlton Inn, which seemed lovely.

Liked: Location / Owners / Ease of turn up and make yourself at home. Composting toilets, clean shower.

Disliked: The closest pub stop serving food at 8pm on Fridays (not a campsite problem!) Just so others are aware and do not go hungry ;)

Non-electric grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: Wow a lovely little gem of a site,
Basic camping at its best, amazing views of fields and country side. Really friendly host, welcomed with a warm smile and advised on location of where to collect wood and offered use of their climbing wall as well.
The outside kitchen was a great touch, keeping the wine cold in the fridge and milk fresh. We had tale end of a storm so being able to cook under cover was brilliant.
The compost toilet was clean and shower was an experience.

Disliked: The road in was a little steep, had been warned about this but worth the climb to the top.
