  • Family-run holiday park with stunning views over Woolacombe beach
  • Three-mile sandy beach 15 minutes' walk away along a footpath
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant and kids' activities on site
Sandy beach on your holiday wishlist? You got it. As the name suggests, Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park is in an excellent location for days on the sands of Woolacombe, on the north Devon coast. A path runs from the site to the beach, taking you down there in about 15-20 minutes without the need to get on the road. And what a beach this is, with three miles of gorgeous golden sand, rockpools to poke about in, and gentle waves for swimming and bodyboarding. Add in summer lifeguards to keep everyone safe and a regular beach cleaning routine and it’s easy to see why this has previously been voted Britain’s best beach. Being so close by, you’ll be able to wander down whenever you like – and you’ll still be able to look at it while you’re on site too, as the pitches are in an elevated position overlooking the sea. And what might you get up to while not at the beach? Well, this family-run park has been in operation for more than 30 years now, and over that time it’s developed a great list of ways to keep everyone happy while on site. The long list of leisure facilities includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, an amusement arcade, UV bowling, crazy golf, a play park and a kids’ club with all sorts of fun activities (circus skills, painting and bug hunts among them). Keeping everyone fed is easy too – barbecues are allowed, and there’s a well-stocked shop on site, or you can grab a table at the Clubhouse for meals and drinks along with evening entertainment. Dogs are welcome at this park, with a pet wash area provided; human facilities are just as good, with five bathroom blocks and a launderette.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: This is a really lovely campsite with good views of the side of the valley and the beach. It’s well maintained and the facilities everywhere are excellent. The food from the clubhouse was surprisingly good and saved us from cooking in the van on lazy days. The pools definitely are a plus side even though they’re aren’t that big and can get crowded quickly. The shop is a nice convenience to have, especially for warm pains au chocolat in the morning. Staff was very friendly everywhere. We loved the proximity to the beach and coastal paths and you don’t need to move your vehicle while staying as everything can be done by foot in reasonable walking distances if you have younger children. The walk to the beach is lovely as you cross through stables and get to see ponies and horses on the way.

Disliked: The promiscuity: We went during the Easter holiday so it was reasonably busy. There were lots of available pitches but we ended up being right next to several other campers which was a bit frustrating as there was availability for us all to be a lot more spread out and enjoy more privacy and better sea views. The pitches aren’t that big so we imagine it being a lot more suffocating in peak season and wouldn’t choose this place for summer holidays.

The price: It is the most we spent on a campsite ever but it does offer high standards and things to do when the weather isn’t nice (which happened to us as we had a fair bit of rain and strong winds on some days).

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The location as it was close to walking routes, the town and the bus stop and the site pitches.... albeit we had a couple of rainy days that made the pitch boggy, but given the weather over the last few weeks it was understandable. The pitch dried out once the weather picked up though. The clubhouse and entertainment were great. The kids loved the pool and entertainment too.

Disliked: The shop could have been more stocked with fresh produce, but we realised it was near the end of season so they were probably running things down.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked: Facilities were close to the pitches and plenty off them around the site. Peaceful but excellent access to the beach and town.
Level pitches with plenty of space.

Disliked: Dog area not fenced in so not secure for letting him run.
Hot water lacking in the mornings for showering and washing up.
Campers being allowed to set up gone 11pm - very loud and disturbing.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch (six person)

Liked: Campsite was great, very quiet and had everything you could possibly need. Easy access to the beach, around a 15 minute walk downhill.
Price was very good.
I'd definitely stay here again.

Disliked: Showers and toilets were quite far away from the pitch.
I can imagine the toilet block would get busy during peak times (summer), as there were only two actual toilets and three showers in Avenue 4's section.
Hot water was luke-warm at best.

Local attractions

The attractions of Woolacombe beach are likely to fill much of your time – but Devon’s not short of excellent beaches, so if you fancy a change of seaside scenery you might like to hit the surf at Croyde (15 minutes’ drive) or Saunton Sands (20 minutes), or head to Ilfracombe (10 minutes) for the Tunnels beaches – it’s also the port for trips to wildlife-packed Lundy Island. Elsewhere along the coast, you might like to spend the day at Watermouth Castle (20 minutes) and its attached theme park, take a walk around the National Trust’s Baggy Point (25 minutes) or step back in time at the traditional fishing village of Clovelly (50 minutes). Keeping kids amused should be simple around here, with the likes of Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (20 minutes), Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes), Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (25 minutes) and The BIG Sheep amusement park (35 minutes) to choose from.
