  • Luxury site in south-west Cornwall, a 10-minute drive from Hayle
  • Several top surf beaches between 10 minutes and half an hour by car
  • A five-minute drive to village pubs and shop
Surfer? Hiker? Beachcomber or gallery browser? Whatever you’re into you’ll be near it from a comfy base at Kernow Camping Pods, in the south west of Cornwall about 10 minutes’ drive from the town and beach of Hayle. The squiggle of land that represents the UK’s most south westerly point is home to a mix of beaches, walking terrain, busy harbour towns and quiet villages. There's loads to see and do around here, which is why the clever lot of Kernow Camping Pods have created swish resting spots for the times in between. The pods are bright and roomy, cosy when Atlantic winds are blowing and cool in the summer, with USB charging points and lighting (wind powered) and comfy sofas that become double beds; bedding is included. There’s storage space on site for bikes, kayaks and surfboards; the showers are piping hot in the mixed communal washrooms and there are separate male and female toilets. It’s a five-minute drive to two fine pubs with food, and a small general shop. Barbecues are welcome – and while it may be hard to get too enthused about washing up, the outdoor scullery area on this site has possibly the best views from any kitchen sink anywhere…

Camping pod

Liked: Quiet setting, good views over valley. Pod was comfortable, seems that toilets have been recently renewed. The manager did respond quickly to questions, provided the tables and barbeque that had been listed but were not on site originally, and arranged to get the shower working again (back in its presumably normal state - see below).

Disliked: The shower - as reported by others too, had very low pressure, and ran intermittently scalding hot (when the gas heater starts up) and cold (when heater stops). Just separately reported this to the manager, hopefully that can get properly fixed.
As at mid July 2023, the site was not as cared-for as the advertised pictures and needed some TLC - weeding, repainting, and general touching-up.
The nearest pub has shut down, permanently it seems.
The narrow approach road was really rocky and uneven in places.

Local attractions

If you’re into riding the waves, then strap your board to your roofrack and make for any one of a dozen surfie hotspots around the coast: Hayle is the nearest, 10 minutes’ drive away, but aficionados may have a preference for Carbis Bay or Sennen Cove, 15 minutes and half an hour away respectively. If you prefer to experience the Atlantic from the dry interior of a boat, St Ives (15 minutes) is the place for sea fishing trips and boat excursions. It’s also brimming with shops and eateries, and it's got an arty buzz thanks to the Tate Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. If you’re after other kinds of history, it’s a half-hour drive to explore the subterranean stories of Geevor Tin Mine, and the Iron Age ruins of Maen Castle. It’s also about half an hour to Land’s End, where you can snap the obligatory selfie and send a postcard. The 630-mile South West Coast Path passes right through the famed final point; you can also access this fab walking route 10 minutes from the site. You can of course go even bit further westwards should you wish – it’s a 15-minute drive to Penzance for boats out to the Scilly Isles.
