Calling time-out on ordinary life? Don’t languish at home – spend your downtime at Brownbread Camping, cosied up in your bell tent at night and exploring 1066 country by day. Spaced out over a peaceful meadow, the bell tents at this stunning site have views over the High Weald National Landscape – and there are no kids to interrupt your downtime, as the whole site is set up for adults only. This small farm setting is really rather lovely, with horses grazing nearby and footpaths trailing off from the quiet country lane including the 30-mile 1066 Country Walk. In the mornings, rustle up a cooked breakfast in the camp kitchen (shared with just one other tent, if occupied). Cooking tools at your disposal in the camp kitchens include a hob, a small grill, a cool box and a small barbecue with charcoal. Evening activities could include sunset watching, stargazing or heading to the local country pub (just a few minutes' walk away) for a drink or a classic pub meal. The spacious five-metre bell tents each come with a comfy double bed, a front awning and a firepit. No need to scurry around the area searching for firelighters either, as each tent has a box with everything you need to make a fire. The double mattress is also equipped with proper bedding, blankets and towels. In the farmyard (a minute's walk away from the tent meadow), there's a communal male and female toilet block, a hot shower and a tap with drinking water.

Local attractions

Looking for a spot that’s very local for a quick peaceful outing? Ashburnham Place (five minutes’ drive), also within walking distance of the bell tents, is just the spot for it. With gardens landscaped by Capability Brown and The Orangery serving artisan bread and cakes, it's a lovely place for a stroll followed by a sweet treat. Ready to soak up some history, especially while you’re staying in 1066 country? Battle Abbey (10 minutes), the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, is well within striking distance. Hastings (25 minutes) is another option, with museums and a ruined castle. For a day by the sea, you could try Bexhill beach (15 minutes) or Pevensey Bay (20 minutes). Eastbourne (half an hour) is just a little further away and full of seaside amusements and Victorian buildings; continue along to the chalky cliffs of Beachy Head (40 minutes) if you're looking to stretch your legs after indulging in a few too many ice creams.
