Whether you’re a keen fan of the oval-ball game or not, the spacious, simple pitches in the grounds of Kendal Rugby Club make a great place for an affordable break in Kendal. Stay here and you’ll be in the grounds of a sports club that’s 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre and train station – and you’ll be supporting a community club that’s been running since the 19th century. The Cumbria club’s pride and joy is its smart clubhouse, which has a kiosk that serves hot and cold food, alcohol and soft drinks daily. A well-equipped gym, along with toilets and hot showers, are also available to all guests. Other facilities include a playground for kids under 16 and a free wifi connection. This is a fine base not only for strolls around the market town of Kendal but also looking beyond to more rural pursuits. The town that calls itself ‘the southern gateway to the Lakes’ is indeed on the edge of the Lake District National Park, around 20 minutes’ drive from Windermere (for boat trips, windsurfing or canoeing) and 45 minutes from Claife Heights. Between the walks, the bike rides, the wildlife spotting, the watersports and the family-friendly attractions, there’s plenty to keep you busy around the Lake District; if that’s not quite enough, head east instead to reach the Yorkshire Dales National Park with around half an hour’s drive. Please note that unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this site, and there's a no-glass policy in place for everyone's safety.

Liked: Great location,with access to up to kentnere etc.

Disliked: Some vending machines in the club house may have been nice to get hit drinks and snacks.

Liked: Great quiet location, with level pitches. Several supermarkets very nearby, Twenty minutes drive from Windermere. Friendly staff. The kiosk serving drinks and snacks was a bonus, but not open every evening. Wifi available, but not brilliant signal.

Disliked: Long walk to the facilities, although these were a high standard and clean. Some late night noise from the rugby club at the weekends.

Liked: Clean and Tidy pitches, excellent facilities. Priced brilliantly, a few rugby games on which was a bonus

We only marked the WiFi down as we didn’t enquire or test if there was any available, we don’t come away to be stuck on phones

Liked: Very nice facilities

Disliked: The Neighbouring campers were very loud and almost fell into our tent. The 9pm time of quiet was totally disregarded

Liked: Plenty of space, flat pitches in nice surroundings, clean and well-equipped shower facilities and plenty of parking. Walkable distance into Kendal town centre and right by a large supermarket with cafe.

Local attractions

You may not be up for a full rugby match while you’re here, but there are plenty more ways to get active in the local area. The greens of Kendal Golf Club are five minutes’ drive away, or you could head to the adventure park at Brockhole on Windermere (20 minutes’ drive) for ziplines, archery and kayaking. While you’re at Windermere, try out sailing and other watersports – or just take a ride on an old steamer if you need something less energetic. Being on the edge of the Lake District there are of course lots of places to get out for a walk around here, but there’s also the option of seeing the scenery at a slower pace on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (half an hour). Other days out nearby might take you to the imposing surrounds of Sizergh Castle (15 minutes), to learn about a former famous resident at World of Beatrix Potter (20 minutes) or to spot fish and other animals from around the world at Lake Aquarium (half an hour). If you don’t have kids in tow, you may also like to try a tour of Hawkshead Brewery (10 minutes).
