  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Some nice pitches away from pub.

Disliked: Having to park a 23 ft motorhome on a car park ( MH longer than bay) by entrance and exit. This entrance extremely busy.
We raised this with the management saying we did not expect to be on the car park, which was very small and busy. The management said it would be fine and that they had entertainment on tonight should be a good night.
Myself and my husband decided not to stay the night due to where we were pitched, I felt due to the large amount of traffic it could get bumped.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Great location. Site itself clean and tidy. Basic facilities but everything worked. Staff helpful.

Disliked: Toilets and showers didn't look like they had been cleaned for several weeks. No toilet roll, shower curtains mouldy, toilets and showers filthy. We have stayed at a lot of campsites and this was by far the worst for cleanliness.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location to explore Northumberland.
Friendly staff on booking in.
Basic but clean facilities.
Good size pitch (the site wasn't full).
Fairly small site so not too busy or noisy.
Friendly horses in the next field!
Good electric hook-up.

Disliked: Could do with the toilets being checked more frequently - we were there 4 days and there was only one toilet (ladies) with loo roll the whole time.
Outdoor washing up facilities could do with being covered - there was a washing up sink in the ladies toilet block but not in the mens, so if it was raining the girls had to wash up by default!
The trains are very close and fairly frequent, but you soon get used to them and barely notice after a while.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Excellent bar and good food in the restaurant

Disliked: Pitch 17 is a double pitch tucked away in the corner and doesn't get any sunlight.
I requested another pitch as i had a trailer and was granted my request no problem at all, however pitch 20 is a double pitch, which wouldn't be a problem for two motorhomes, however i had to assist a lady to park her caravan before she parked her car at the clubhouse. Not really an issue but worth noting.

Liked: big pitches and electric hook up and water supply to each pitch. Pub serving meals Wed - Sun, very good food and friendly staff.

Disliked: A bit noisy at night with trains so close. Didn't bother us but I could see some people would be disturbed.

Disliked: Not What We Expected – Avoid if You're Looking for a Peaceful, Family-Friendly Stay

We made the mistake of booking this campsite for a quiet weekend away with the kids, and I honestly wish we’d read between the lines before committing. If you’re after a calm, family-friendly site, steer clear.

The biggest issue was the noise — a theme night at the attached pub turned the entire site into an after-hours party zone. Loud music, shouting, and clearly drunk guests kept going well past 1am. It felt more like a festival campsite than somewhere you’d bring children or hope to relax.

The facilities were another letdown. Basic and dated, they clearly haven’t had a proper upgrade in years. Definitely not what you’d expect if you’re used to better-maintained, more thoughtfully managed sites. And the children’s play area? Tiny, uninspiring, and barely usable — more of a token gesture than a real amenity.

Overall, this campsite might appeal to a certain crowd, but it’s not suited to families or anyone used to a higher standard of camping. We won’t be back, and I’d strongly advise others to think twice before booking.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The on site pub, serving nice pub food at reasonable prices. Although close to railway the site was still very peaceful and also has options of pitches well away from the track as informed by the owner, when we arrived. Staff really friendly and helpful. Fairly basic facilities however had everything needed for pitching up with showers, washing up facilities etc and added bonus of water on the pitch.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
